On Dec. 15 at the 2022 Lakota Nation Invitational, Tiospaye Topa’s Kris Meeter poured in a tournament-record 54 points against Santee, Nebraska.

A cursory check of this year’s program and visits with several Lakota Nation Board members, including tournament director Bryan Brewer, and it was confirmed Meeter had the highest individual scoring game in Lakota Nation Invitational history.

Fortunately sports historian Dale Pine Jr. of Pine Ridge has been keeping tabs on those records and it was later confirmed that Meeter broke Little Wound’s Anthony Hopkins’ single-game record of 49 points in 2012.

“The Lakota Nation Board asked me and Tom Casey (of KILI Radio) to keep track of those records in 2007,” Pine said. “There was some debate when they went from a 12-team bracket to a 16-team bracket so I tried to respect that with the records I kept.”

Turns out Meeter’s scoring barrage wasn’t the only record broken in 2022.
