PRESHO — Something special is brewing in the Hot Springs wrestling room. 

Of the seventeen athletes on the roster, fourteen of them are sophomores or younger. Over the weekend the Bison wrestlers tied with Bennett County for 11th place in the Mid-Dakota Monster tournament with 85 points. Eighth-grader John Ryder Weiss finished seventh (120), freshman Thor Fish (165) was sixth, sophomore Hunter Kunz finished third (175) and freshman Von Mogen-Frankfort was seventh (190). 

The upper weight classes, particularly for an athlete like Mogen-Frankfort, are hard for youngsters to compete against what are typically junior and senior laden weight classes. You place at the Mid-Dakota Monster and chances are good that a state tournament, and a potential spot on the podium are in the very near future. 

Sturgis wrestlers dominate Wyoming’s No. 1 ranked wrestling team

The Sturgis wrestling team, ranked No. 1 in Class A in South Dakota, dominated Wyoming’s top-ranked team Thunder Basin in a dual on Thursday, Jan. 9. The Scoopers, wrestling without top-ranked Kelson Dirk (190) won that dual, 44-24

Where has Howard’s Weston Remmers been?

One of the burning questions coming out of the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational is where in the heck has Howard’s Weston Remmers been? Remmers finished third (165) at the 2024 Class B state tournament but has not been seen on the mat (or rankings) this season until Saturday when he wrestled in the Bob Lager Invitational in Miller. 

Remmers wrestled at 175 and dropped a 3-1 decision to Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall’s Kale Croswer in the finals. 

 

Doland’s Kyla Logan picks up 100th win at Mid-Dakota Bride of the Monster:

Doland’s Kyla Logan opened up this week and shared her story of battling epilepsy while remaining one of the top girls wrestlers in South Dakota - On Saturday, Doland, a state champion in 2021 recorded the 100th win of her career.

Great Match at Bob Lager Invitational: Gannon Knebel versus Josh Kannegieter

It is a little too early to be predicting state championship matchups but if Saturday’s Bob Lager 190-pound results are any indication, don’t be surprised if Wagner’s Gannon Knebel and Clark/Willow Lake’s Josh Kannegieter meet in the 190-pound finals. Knebel earned a 5-4 decision but Kannegieter’s length posed some problems including Knebel giving up the first takedown of the match:
