SIOUX FALLS — Down go the Tigers.

Sioux Falls Jefferson knocked off No. 1 Harrisburg in a nail-biting 1-0 contest, securing the first spot in the Class A state championship game at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Cavaliers, behind a stellar pitching performance from senior Ethan Biggar, plated the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, Brody Jacobsen grounded to third base but beat the throw to first, scoring the winning run.

“That’s a testament to all these guys. They got no quit,” said Jefferson coach James Borges. “Two things we talk about all year are attitude and effort. Those are the things you can control and the effort today and the effort today and the attitude today was above all else.”

With a 1-0 lead going into the last half inning, all that was needed was one last shutout from Biggar. The Cavalier ace went 1-2-3, striking out the last two batters to slam the door on the Tigers.

“Maybe a little bit but after the first two pitches with the batter in the box it was all good from there,” said Biggar on the nerves of the last inning. “But it meant a lot to me because it felt like we were up 10 with the way that game was going. We were all playing well defensively and I kind of felt like the job was done.”

Biggar gave the Cavs one of his best performances of the season in a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit, two walks and two hit batters in 97 pitches, striking out nine batters.

“All of my pitches were working well for me,” said Biggar. “Mainly it was trusting my defense behind me so that gave me more confidence in my pitches that they were there to back me up.”

But it’s tough to shutout one of the best teams in the state without any trouble. In the fourth inning, Biggar found himself in a bases loaded, zero out situation and the Tiger’s heart of the order coming up.

Biggar forced back-to-back ground balls and struck out Harrisburg’s Taten Munce to get out of the jam without a scratch.

“Those are the most fun moments when the pressure is on you,” said Biggar. “Honestly, I was excited with the bases loaded and no outs. It made the adrenaline kick up a little bit and it helped me get through it.”

It’s a testament to the leadership provided by the senior pitcher. Coach Borges never went out for a mound visit because he trusts his guy and his ability to get the job done.

“Easton Riley and Ethan Biggar have worked together all summer so they’re always on the same page,” said Borges. “They know when to call time and slow things down a bit. Pulling that momentum out of that tight situation was big for us.”

The Cavaliers, who shut out Harrisburg 4-0 back on April 10, do it once again but this time, to end the Tigers’

“This is who you want to go against,” said Borges. “This is a championship caliber team in Harrisburg and both teams executed, threw strikes, everyone participated. Full of energy, a lot of heart from both teams and fortunately we came out on the winning side today.”

Jacobsen tallied two hits and an RBI in the win, Boston Bryant tallied a triple and a walk while Riley and Carson Hughes each tallied hits for the Cavs.

Harrisburg’s Kason Syverson took the loss allowing one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Kade Wede tossed 4.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks in his start. Eli Kokenge tallied the lone hit of the game for Harrisburg.

Sioux Falls Jefferson will play the Sioux Falls Lincoln vs. Brandon Valley winner at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Class A state championship. Tune in to the state championship on LiveTicket.Tv.

“We need to keep playing Cavalier baseball,” said Borges. “We’re going to go out, support each other and execute.”
