July 25 Amateur Baseball Roundup - Dimock-Emery edges Mount Vernon in extra innings, secures state tourney berth

Dimock-Emery 2, Mount Vernon 1 (10 innings)

PARKSTON — Dimock-Emery outlasted Mount Vernon in a highly-competitive District 5B amateur baseball tournament game on Tuesday. The Raptors now secure a spot in the Class B state tournament on Aug. 2-13 in Mitchell. 

In the 10th inning, Sam Pischke drew a bases-loaded walk to score Drew Kitchens from third base for the go-ahead run. After Dimock-Emery starter Jason Schmidt plunked lead-off batter Chase Hetland, Kitchens relieved him and retired three straight batters to preserve the win. 

Schmidt scattered seven hits, allowed one earned run, issued zero walks and struck out seven batters on 146 pitches. Peyton Nash had two of Dimock-Emery’s three hits, while Parker Bollinger had the other hit. 

Mount Vernon’s Spencer Neugebauer and Bradley Dean had two hits apiece. Koby Larson, Deric Denning and Cameron Deinert had hits. Deinert drove in Mount Vernon’s lone run in the fifth inning, on a two-out RBI double. 

In the eighth, Kitchens scored from third base on a wild pitch to even the score at 1-1. 

Denning pitched all 10 innings, finishing with eight strikeouts, nine walks and allowed two earned runs on three hits. He threw 165 pitches. 


Platte 9, Parkston Mudcats 8

PARKSTON — Hunter Hewitt’s walk-off single propelled Platte past the Parkston Mudcats for a District 5B amateur baseball tournament win on Tuesday. The Killer Tomatoes secured a spot in the Class B state tournament on Aug. 2-13 in Mitchell. 

Platte’s Mason Townsend finished with three hits, drove in three runs and hammered a home run. Hewitt, Sheldon Gant and Grant Doom had two hits apiece. Michael Buitenbos drove in two runs, while Gant, Hewitt, Doom and Richard Sternberg drove in runs. Sternberg earned the win after throwing four scoreless relief innings, finishing with four strikeouts and allowing two hits. Travis Gant started and lasted five innings, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits and striking out seven batters.

For the Mudcats, Jeff Harris and Cole Knippling had three hits and three RBI apiece. Knippling clubbed a home run. Ryan McGinnis and Luke Bormann had two hits apiece, while Bormann drove in a run. Jake Weber started and lasted five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out five batters. 

 

Canova 10, Flandreau 7

FLANDREAU — Canova plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away from Flandreau for a District 4B amateur baseball tournament win on Tuesday. Canova secured a spot in the Class B state tournament on Aug. 2-13 in Mitchell. 

Canova’s Justin Miller collected three hits and drove in a run. Kendall Gassman also had three hits and an RBI. Derek Miller and Jared Miller each drove in two runs. Gassmann started and lasted seven innings, finishing with five strikeouts, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and walked four batters. Tyler Genzlinger earned the win after throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. 

For Flandreau, Keith Cutler had three hits and an RBI. Bret Severtson and Luke Gassman each had two hits. 


Clark 8, Elkton 7

CLARK — Clark outlasted Elkton in district amateur baseball action on Tuesday. The Traders secured a spot in the Class B state tournament on Aug. 2-13 in Mitchell. 

Clark’s Grayson Florey, Rhett Florey and Bryce DesLauriers had two hits apiece. Rhett Florey, DesLauriers and Brent Griffith each drove in two runs. DesLauriers and Brent Griffith each hammered home runs. 

Elkton’s Logan Kuehl finished with three hits and an RBI. Billy Stuefen had two hits and knocked in three runs. Dylan Christensen added two hits. Aidan Stewart took the loss after allowing seven hits, eight earned runs, five walks and struck out six batters in his seven-inning start.
