July 7 Amateur Baseball Roundup - Canova clubs 12 hits, Derek Miller strikes out 14 batters against Salem

Canova Gang 9, Salem Cubs 1

CANOVA — Justin Miller hammered two home runs and Derek Miller struck out 14 batters to power Canova to a Cornbelt League amateur baseball win over Salem on Thursday. 

Miller finished 3 of 4 at the plate and had four RBIs. Miller allowed five hits, one earned run and walked five batters on 161 pitches. 

Riley Genzlinger, Cole Gassman and Garrett Gassman had two hits apiece. Kendall Gassman, Tim Gassman and Jason Miller each had a hit. Tim Gassman drove in two runs. The Gang collected 12 hits.

Platte Killer Tomatoes 4, Alexandria Angels 3 (14 innings) 

ALEXANDRIA — Derek Soukup’s two-out RBI triple in the 14th inning lifted Platte to a Sunshine League amateur baseball win over Alexandria on Thursday. 

Soukup led Platte with three hits in seven at-bats. Ryan Allen and Michael Buitenbos had two hits apiece. Hunter Hewitt hammered a solo home run, while Grant Doom, Jarod Severson, Owen London and Preston Nedved each had a hit. Doom struck out eight batters, allowed two hits, zero runs and walked four batters in five relief innings to secure the win. Buitenbos allowed 12 hits, three earned runs, struck out four batters and walked one in his nine-inning start. 

Alexandria’s Tyson Gau finished 4 of 6 and had a triple. Michael Schoettmer added three hits and Cole Wenande had two hits. Jed Schmidt, Adam Durfee, Jacob Giles and Jerrod Zens each had a hit. Gau struck out 13 batters, allowed 10 hits, three earned runs and walked three batters in his 9.1-inning start. Schmidt struck out nine batters, allowed two hits, one earned run and walked four batters in 4.2 relief innings.

 

Mount Vernon Mustangs 12, Dimock-Emery Raptors 7 (12 innings) 

EMERY — Deric Denning crushed a grand slam in the top of the 12th inning to lift Mount Vernon to a Sunshine League amateur baseball win over Dimock-Emery on Thursday. The teams combined for 31 hits. 

Denning finished 3 of 5 and scored three runs, while Luke Tiesler and Briggs Havlik also hammered homers. Havlik, Tiesler and Spencer Neugebauer finished with three hits apiece. Tiesler drove in three runs, while Neugebauer had two RBIs. Koby Larson, Brady Albrecht and Hunter Pranger each had a hit. Denning struck out eight batters, allowed five hits, two earned runs and walked one batter in five relief innings to earn the win. Tiesler allowed 11 hits, five earned runs, walked four batters and struck out three batters in his seven-inning start. 

The Raptors recorded 16 hits, including three apiece from Peyton Nash, Sam Michels, Colton Plagmann and Sam Arend. Nash drove in two runs. Phil Johnson, Bryce Smart, Sam Pischke and Chase Arend each had a hit. Phil Johnson struck out 15 batters, allowed 12 hits, seven runs (six earned) and walked two batters in his 11-inning start.


Freeman Blacksox 8, Parkston Mudcats 4

FREEMAN — Ben Simonsen and Jake Weier combined for 11 strikeouts as Freeman picked up a non-league amateur baseball win over Parkston on Thursday.

Simonsen struck out six batters, allowed three hits, four earned runs and four walks in his three-inning start. Weier struck out five batters, gave up three hits, zero run and walked one batter in 5.2 innings of relief. 

Blake Schroedermeier had two of Freeman’s six hits and drove in three runs. Weier, Owen Feser, Bailey Sage and Micah Swensen each had a hit.

For Parkston, Jeff Harris, Nate Doering, Matt Malloy, Dylan Mogck, Landon Sudbeck and Logan Heidinger each had a hit. Doering finished with two RBIs. Jake Weber struck out three batters, surrendered five hits, six runs (two earned) and walked two batters in his six-inning start. 


Renner Monarchs 9, Brookings Cubs 4

BROOKINGS — Tom Sun struck out 14 batters in Renner’s amateur baseball win over Brookings on Thursday.

Sun allowed seven hits, three earned runs and walked four batters in his eight-inning start. Ben Ihrke and D. Borchardt both smacked home runs. Borchardt hit a three-run shot, while Ihrke slugged a solo homer. Sun, Kyle Gulbrandson and Mitch Stroh each had two hits. 

For Brookings, Chase McDaniel, Sam McMacken and Austin Koenig each had two hits. McMacken belted a home run. Tyler Kreutner took the loss after allowing seven hits, six runs (four earned), walked three batters and struck out six in his seven-inning start. 


Kimball/White Lake 21, Colome Chaos 4 (5 innings) 

WHITE LAKE — Kimball/White Lake pounded out 11 hits en route to a 17-run Pony Hills League amateur baseball win over Colome on Thursday.

Kimball/White Lake received hits from eight different players. Dylanger Pierson clubbed a grand slam in the fifth inning. 

Brian Zeman added two hits, while Trent Wookey, Zak Wallner, Dylan Konechne, Wes Kroupa and Seth Kirsch each had a hit. Wallner fanned eight batters, allowed eight hits, four runs and walked zero batters in five innings to earn the win. 

For Colome, Sid Bice had a team-high two hits and drove in a run. Jackson Kinzer, Ethan Vobr, Kelly O’Bryan, Carter Brickman, Joey Cole and Shea Connot each had a hit. O’Bryan was the losing pitcher after allowing nine hits, 11 runs (eight earned), struck out six batters and walked five in his 3.1-inning start. 

 

Four Corners 17, Plankinton Gold Sox 10

PLANKINTON — Four Corners plated 15 runs in the final four innings to pick up a Pony Hills League amateur baseball win over the Plankinton Gold Sox on Thursday. 

Andrew Coverdale led Four Corners with four hits and drove in two runs. J.D. Farley added two hits and three RBIs. Brad Hand, Noah Hainy, Adam Kaus and Jeremy Hand each had a hit. Farley earned the win after allowing two hits, two earned runs, five walks and struck out three batters in five relief innings.

For Plankinton, Andrew Becker, Ben Laufman and Sean DeVries had two hits apiece. Becker drove in three runs, while Laufman and DeVries each had two RBIs. Devin Mehlhaff allowed two hits, four runs (two earned), walked three batters and struck out zero in one relief inning to take the loss.
