SIOUX FALLS — Under windy conditions, Kadoka Area’s Lincoln Koehn won his second straight Class B state title in the discus on Friday.

The Kadoka Area High School senior heaved a throw of 173-feet and five inches, earning his second consecutive Class B discus championship. Koehn also won the all-class gold medal award, given to the top performer in each event, regardless of class.

“It’s amazing,” Koehn said. “I have been working for this since November of last year and it’s just been putting one little piece together at a time. It’s been amazing.”

Koehn, along with other competitors, had to contend with swirling winds on a blustery day at Howard Wood Field.

“It’s very difficult,” Koehn said. “Because if you stand up just a little bit in the ring, it makes a giant effect on the result.”

Koehn’s goal was 188 feet, which would have broken Harding County’s Jason Long Class B record of 187-9. But Koehn wasn’t going to complain too much about winning another state title.

“I am very pleased,” Koehn said. “I was thinking I might get a 160 today because the wind was so bad. But I can’t complain with the 173.”

It was also a good day for the Western Great Plains Conference discus throwers. In addition to Koehn, Philip’s Evan Kroetch (160-9) and White River’s Ethan Watson (152-7) finished second and third, respectively, in the Class B discus.

“It’s very tough, very tough and it’s just been fun throwing with them every single time,” Koehn said about competing against his conference foes.

When asked how much they’ve driven to succeed, Koehn said “Way more than they know.”
