May 21 Baseball Roundup - Mitchell picks up two Region 4A wins to capture State A tournament berth

Mitchell 6, Harrisburg 2

MITCHELL — Mitchell punched its ticket to the Class A high school baseball tournament with a win over fifth-seeded Harrisburg in the Region 4A championship on Saturday.

Jake Helleloid earned the win for Mitchell, pitching 5 ⅓ innings, allowing two runs, three hits, and striking out 10.

Schmidt, Dylan Soulek, Jace Larson, and Seth Muth each had one hit for Mitchell.

Jack Sutton took the loss for Harrisburg, pitching five innings, allowing two hits, four runs, and striking out six. Sutton also led the Tigers with two hits.


Mitchell 5, Sioux Falls Jefferson 3

MITCHELL — Fourth-seeded Mitchell picked up a Region 4A semifinal high school baseball win over 13-seeded Sioux Falls Jefferson on Saturday. The win moved Mitchell into the Region 4A championship against Harrisburg. 

Landon Waddell earned the win, lasting six innings and allowing two hits and three runs while striking out eight.

Jonah Schmidt and Jake Helleloid each had two hits for Mitchell. 

Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Kyler Miritello took the loss, pitching five innings and giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out four.


Harrisburg 4, Sturgis 3

MITCHELL — Harrisburg edged Sturgis in a Region 4A high school baseball semifinal on Saturday.

Maddox Plack was the winning pitcher for the Tigers, allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out five in six innings.

Jack Sutton led the Tigers with two hits in three at bats.

Kain Peters took the loss for the Scoopers, giving up four runs on seven hits, while striking out four in six innings.


Yankton 7, Pierre 1

SIOUX FALLS — Ninth-seeded Yankton broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and never looked back in a Region 1A semifinal high school baseball win over eighth-seeded Pierre on Saturday. Yankton moved on to face top-seeded Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the Region 1A championship.

Yankton’s Joe Gokie earned the win, allowing four hits, one run, striking out six and walking one in seven innings.

Lucas Kampshoff and Dylan Prouty each had two hits to lead Yankton.

Brady Getz took the loss for Pierre, pitching four innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out two.

George Stalley, Jayden Wiebe, Lincoln Kienholz, and Jett Zabel each had one hit for Pierre.


Sioux Falls Roosevelt 2, Yankton 1

SIOUX FALLS — Jack Radel’s sac fly allowed Sioux Falls Roosevelt to sneak past Yankton in the Region 1A championship on Saturday and punch the Rough Riders ticket to the State A baseball tournament.

Ben Irsfeld took the win, striking out 12 batters, while allowing one run on five hits in seven innings. Irsfeld and Jaxsen Grevengoed each had two hits to lead the Rough Riders.

Samuel Kampshoff took the loss, giving up zero runs on three hits, while striking out six in 4 ⅓ innings.


Brandon Valley 12, Rapid City Central 2

BRANDON — Brandon Valley raced past Rapid City Central for a Region 2A semifinal high school baseball win on Saturday.

Tayden Mitchell earned the win, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out nine in 5 ⅓ innings.

Carson Askdal went 3 of 4 to lead the Lynx in hits, while Daniel Buteyn had two hits.

Kyle Schlueter took the loss, giving up 10 runs on eight hits and striking out two in 4 ⅔ innings.

Riley Palmer led Rapid City Central with two hits in three at bats.


Sioux Falls Lincoln 3, Rapid City Stevens 1

BRANDON — Sioux Falls Lincoln picked up a Region 2A semifinal high school baseball win on Saturday.

Lincoln Vasgaard picked up the win, allowing two hits and one run in seven innings, while striking out seven.

Ryan Husman had three hits and Charlie Mickelson added two hits to lead the Patriots.

Luke Jegeris took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in 5 ⅔ innings while striking out two.


Sioux Falls Lincoln 8, Brandon Valley 3

BRANDON — Nathan Motl’s third-inning grand slam propelled Sioux Falls Lincoln past Brandon Valley in the Region 2A championship and sealed a Class A state tournament berth for the Patriots on Saturday.

Motl and Gavin Solomon each had two hits, while Charlie Mickelson led the Patriots with three hits in four at bats.

Jackson Boe earned the win on the mound, giving up three runs on five hits in 6 ⅔ innings and striking out seven.

Trey Sejnoha took the loss, allowing seven hits and seven runs in six innings, while striking out nine and walking one.


Brookings 8, Huron 2

BROOKINGS — Brookings raced past Huron in a Region 3A semifinals high school baseball game on Saturday.

Nathan Lease took the win, allowing four hits and two runs in seven innings, while striking out seven.

Jake Ammann, Sam Hardin, and Ashton Witte each had two hits to lead the Bobcats. 

Johnny Hernandez took the loss for Huron, giving up seven runs on seven hits in 4 ⅔ innings and striking out four.

Max Kranzler led the Tigers with two hits in three at bats.


Sioux Falls Washington 5, Bishop O’Gorman 3

BROOKINGS — Sioux Falls Washington outlasted Bishop O’Gorman in a Region 3A high school baseball game on Saturday.

Myles Rees took the win, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven in seven innings.

Patrick Osborn led the Warriors with two hits in three at bats.

Trey Heckenlaible took the loss, going two innings and allowing one hit and two runs while striking out one.


Sioux Falls Washington 6, Brookings 4 

BROOKINGS — Sioux Falls Washington earned a trip to the Class A state tournament by defeating Brookings in the Region 3A championship on Saturday.

Bryce Ronken picked up the win, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out four in four innings. Ronken also led Sioux Falls Washington in hits with two in four at bats.

Jake Ammann took the loss, pitching six innings, and allowing five hits and six runs while striking out seven.

Charlie Holm led Brookings with two hits in three at bats.
