SIOUX FALLS — Ashton Massey finished her high school track and field career in a familiar spot — on top of the podium.

The Menno High School senior won three events at this year’s Class B state track and field, including the two hurdle races on Saturday. Massey won the 100-meter hurdles (:15.10) and 300-meter hurdles (:44.92), to go along with her triple jump (35-9.75) title earlier in the meet.

It’s the second straight season that Massey won three state championships at the state meet.

“It’s a crazy feeling,” Massey said. “All the work, all the hours I put in paid off and it’s a full circle moment. I remember being a freshman here and dreaming of the podium and being on top of it. It’s crazy.”

In the 300-meter hurdles, finished ahead of Burke’s Piper Hanson (:46.44) under rainy conditions at Howard Wood Stadium.

“Honestly, I was like maybe it’s in other people’s heads that it’s raining,” Massey said. “Like I am going to take this as an advantage and use it as best that I can.”

Earlier in the day, Massey again edged Hanson (:15.31) in the 100-meter hurdles to start her day. She finished nearly a foot ahead of Gayville-Volin’s Jolie Westrum (34-8.75) for the triple jump title. Massey also ran on Menno's 3,200-meter relay (10:10.74), which finished in sixth place.

Massey, who also played basketball and volleyball for the Wolves, will continue her track and field career at Augustana University next season.

What will Massey miss the most about running for the Wolves?

“The team,” she said. “They’re family. They are my best friends. They lifted me up in my lowest moments. They have been there for me all throughout the years.”
