VOLGA — A ranked matchup at the Round Ball went the way of the Chargers.

Class A No. 6 Sioux Falls Christian (11-3) rolled to a 55-46 win over No. 5 Sioux Valley in Game 3 of Saturday’s Round Ball Classic in Volga.

The Chargers took care of business against the home team inside the Cossack Center behind a 22-point double-double from junior center Lezlei Setzer.

“I feel like it was a solid team win,” Setzer said. “Second half was a little rough but I feel like we were able to come together and still play good.”

Holding a four-point lead through the first quarter the Chargers defense turned into offense, going on a 13-0 run over the final five and a half minutes. Junior forward Emory Lems hit a layup at the first half buzzer to give the Chargers a 32-16 advantage.

“I thought our girls came out with a lot of fire in that first half,” said SFC head coach Dan DeJong. “We did a good job executing and being able to get the ball down low offensively. Defensively, I thought we made it really tough to be able to hold them to 16 points in the first half.”

But the Cossacks (11-2) slowly clawed its way back in. SV outscored SFC by five in the third quarter before cutting the lead to just six after two free throws from Amari Ward with 5:07 to play.

“We just got a little more stagnant and started forcing some stuff on offense and we missed a couple easy buckets, that’s just what it comes down to,” DeJong said of the second half struggles. “I think we had four opportunities inside the lane from three feet and we missed them and early in the game we were making them.”

The Charger defense stepped up over the final three minutes forcing three turnovers, turning into a quick 7-0 run for the defending state champs with just two minutes left to secure the win.

SFC forced 26 turnovers in the win, aided by the size and length mismatch the Dak-XII foe provides.

“We’re long and we’re athletic and we really try to pride ourselves defensively,” DeJong said of the team’s defensive effort. “I think our girls do a good job buying in on that side of the basketball, and if we are able to get some points and wear out on teams, I think that’s really big for us.”

Despite getting outscored 30-23 in the second half, the SFC defense made crucial stops down the stretch for its second ranked win of the season.

“Our defense started lacking a little bit,” Setzer said. “I feel like we started getting a little bit complacent, so just having to bring that right back up to how we had it in the first half.”

Setzer finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds (six offensive rebounds), two blocks and one steal to lead the Chargers. Lems added 13 points, five boards and two steals, Nealie Sanford had eight points and four rebounds while Ruth Dvoracek had seven points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win.

For SV, Miley Keating led with 13 points and six rebounds, Liberty Trygstad added 13 points, Ward had 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists while Kailey Cradduck netted seven points, six rebounds and three blocks in the loss.
