Nov. 21 Class AA Volleyball Roundup - Sioux Falls Washington holds off Sioux Falls Roosevelt in five-set thriller

Sioux Falls Washington 3, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 2

SIOUX FALLS — Sioux Falls Washington outlasted Roosevelt in a five-set thriller during Thursday’s State AA quarterfinal round. The set scores were 20-25, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, and 15-10.

Washington’s Kaelyn Snoozy powered the Warrior offense with 22 kills and 21 digs, Cate Legel tallied 19 kills, 20 digs, four blocks, and three assists, Emily Akkerman dished out 41 assists, 23 digs, and two kills, Taryn Kirsch recorded 30 digs, six aces, and six assists, while Hannah Nesdahl had 16 digs in the win.

Roosevelt’s Kaylee Evenson led the way with 14 kills and 28 digs, Izzy Brinkman recorded 13 kills and 28 digs, Kate Wiebsiek had 38 assists and 21 digs, Katie Bleeker tallied 33 digs and four aces, while Christy Moncur totaled 11 digs in the loss.

Washington advances to the State AA semifinal round Friday at 6:45 p.m. where it will take on Sioux Falls Jefferson, while Roosevelt faces Brandon Valley in the consolation bracket at 12:45 p.m.

Harrisburg 3, Aberdeen Central 0

SIOUX FALLS — Top ranked and No. 1 seed Harrisburg easily advanced to Friday’s semifinals of the Class AA state volleyball tournament by sweeping Aberdeen Central. The set scores were 25-16, 25-18 and 25-14. 

Gabi Zachariasen powered Harrisburg with 17 kills, four aces, fifteen digs and a solo block. Josalyn Samuels finished with 27 assists, two kills and five digs while Kennedy Kokenge added four kills, an ace and 20 digs. Bergen Steff finished with five kills, an ace, a dig and an assisted block while Karalynn Leach had three kills and 20 digs. 

Lauryn Burckhard led Aberdeen Central with eight kills, two assists, five digs and a solo block. Alivia Miller had 14 assists, a kill and four digs while Kenadi Withers had three kills, 12 digs and three assisted blocks.

Harrisburg will face Sioux Falls O’Gorman in the state semifinals tomorrow at 5 p.m., while Aberdeen Central takes on Watertown in the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. Friday.


Sioux Falls O’Gorman 3, Watertown 0

SIOUX FALLS — No. 4 seed Sioux Falls O’Gorman took down No. 5 Watertown in the opening round of the Class AA state volleyball tournament. The set scores were 25-20, 25-23, and 25-19.

Leading the Knights to a quarterfinal victory was Lauren Venenga tallying 11 kills, 12 digs and one block, Ruthie Robinson had eight kills and two blocks, Kyra Hermason recorded 44 assists and six digs, Zoie Roghair had 17 digs, Tyla Mauney tallied 24 digs, while Katie McKay had 11 digs in the victory.

Watertown’s Emery Thury led the way with 15 kills and five digs, Grace Corey totaled 27 assists, eight digs, and one block, Anna Hirtz recorded 10 kills, four digs, and one block, while Natalie Pearson led all Arrows in digs with 15.

O’Gorman advances to the state semifinals and will face No. 1 Harrisburg tomorrow at 5 p.m., while Watertown moves to the consolation round to play No. 8 Aberdeen Central at 11 a.m.


Sioux Falls Jefferson 3, Brandon Valley 1

SIOUX FALLS — After dropping Set 1, No. 2 Sioux Falls Jefferson rallied three straight to defeat No. 7 Brandon Valley during the opening round of the State AA volleyball tournament. The set scores were 20-25, 25-18, 25-21, and 25-23.

Jefferson’s Isabel Simmons and Emory Brosnahan provided the spark offensively with 17 kills apiece, with Simmons recording six blocks and Brosnahan tallying nine digs and two blocks in the win. Peyten Krull tallied 10 kills, 15 digs and two aces, Audrey Simmons had seven kills, Averi Schmitt directed traffic with 48 assists, 23 digs and four kills, Riley Fodness tallied 22 digs, while Sienna Sabers tallied four kills in the win as well.

BV’s Abby Gruber recorded 13 kills and five blocks, Jayaunna Stroh totaled 11 kills, 11 digs and three blocks, Ashley Ertelt tallied eight kills, Logan McGuire and Riya Sheley each had 18 assists and a combined 25 digs, while Mya VanWesten tallied 31 digs in the loss.

Jefferson advances to Friday night’s state semifinals and will take on Sioux Falls Washington at 6:45 p.m. while Brandon Valley will face Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the consolation semifinals tomorrow at 12:45 p.m.
