Oct. 3 Football Games to Watch - Parkston hosts Platte-Geddes in Missouri Valley Conference contest

Platte-Geddes at Parkston 

PARKSTON — Two Missouri Valley Conference opponents will clash on Friday in Parkston. 

Class 9AA No. 5 Parkston (4-1) will host Class 9A No. 4 Platte-Geddes (6-0) in a conference clash. 

Parkston dropped a 20-6 decision against Class 9AA No. 1 Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy, but has strung together a four-game winning streak since. The Trojans are coming off a 70-21 win over Bon Homme on Sept. 26. Parkston piled up 46 first-half points.

Mason Jervik and Gage Reichert had a pair of touchdown runs, while Jervik added an 82-yard punt return for a score. Brycen Bruening connected with Jaxon Leischner for a 24-yard touchdown reception. 

Platte-Geddes improved to 6-0 after last week’s 64-28 win over Lyman. The Black Panthers are led by the senior duo of quarterback Jye Bailey and running back Kenyon Kuiper. The duo combined for seven rushing touchdowns, and connected for a Bailey-to-Kuiper 48-yard touchdown reception last week.


Wagner at Elk Point-Jefferson

ELK POINT — A top-five Class 11B showdown will take place in Elk Point.

Class 11B No. 1 Elk Point-Jefferson (5-0) will host Class 11B No. 5 Wagner (5-1) in a key Class 11B contest. 

The Huskies are one of five undefeated teams still standing in Class 11B, and are coming off a 49-14 win over Beresford on Sept. 26. The Huskies have relied heavily on their rushing attack, having racked up 1,760 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground. 

EPJ’s Beau Schmitz had rushed for 538 yards and seven touchdowns, while Luke Schmitz had 406 yards and five touchdowns. Aiden Hammitt (330 yards/3 TDs) and Brody VanRoekel (238 yards/6 TDs) have also produced on the ground. Ben Trudeau had 114 passing yards and three touchdown passes. 

On Sept. 26, Wagner dropped a 13-6 decision against Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central. The Red Raiders rely heavily on quarterback Gannon Knebel, who has produced more than 900 yards passing, and more than 800 yards rushing. Shea Kjeldgaard, Carlos Galindo, Cruise Koupal and Payne Petry are reliable weapons on offense. 


Howard at Hanson

ALEXANDRIA — Two Cornbelt Conference powers will collide on Friday in Alexandria. 

Class 9A Howard (4-1) will play at Class 9AA Hanson (3-2) in a matchup between two Cornbelt Conference foes. 

The Tigers, who won last season’s Class 9A state championship, have rattled off four straight victories after a 40-29 setback against Alcester-Hudson in the season opener. In last week’s 54-8 win over Canistota, Howard rushed for 388 yards on 30 carries and scored seven touchdowns. 

Howard’s Kolt Becker tallied 269 yards rushing on 14 carries and scored four touchdowns, while also scoring on an 84-yard kickoff return. He also intercepted two passes on defense. Gabe Miller, Drew Maier and Korbin Shumaker also scored on touchdown runs. 

In last week’s 49-0 win over Chester, the Beavers racked up 447 total yards. Hanson’s Stetson Riggs rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown. Cole Dewald, Radek Jarding and Jason Porth added rushing touchdowns. Jett Jager passed for 113 yards and three touchdown passes. Porth caught two touchdowns, while Dewald also hauled in a passing touchdown. 


Clark/Willow Lake at Deuel 

CLEAR LAKE — Two rising programs in Class 11B battle it out Friday night in Clear Lake.

Clark/Willow Lake (4-1) will travel to Deuel (5-0) Friday in hopes of handing the Cardinals its first loss of the season.

The Cyclones are winners of three straight, including wins over Sioux Valley (26-8), Parker (34-13) and Groton Area (20-7). CWL’s only loss on the season was against Sioux Valley in their first meeting, 22-8, on Aug. 29. The Cyclones are led by junior quarterback Joey Ries, as well as running backs Jakob Steen and Emmerson Larson.

Deuel is still looking for a signature win after starting the 2025 season 5-0. The Cardinals have wins over Flandreau twice (18-6, 26-14), Aberdeen Roncalli (48-26), Groton Area (20-0) and most recently Sioux Valley (46-40) last Friday. Last week against Sioux Valley, quarterback Aiden Sievers hit Oliver Fieber as time expired to take the walk-off win over the Cossacks. Sievers ended the game completing 11-of-19 passes for 219 yards and four passing touchdowns. Senior wideout Troy Jensen caught five passes for 124 yards and a touchdown, Fieber caught three touchdowns in the win with 84 receiving yards while Gavin Kloos rushed for 90 yards and a score.


West Central at Dell Rapids 

DELL RAPIDS — No. 3 and No. 4 in Class 11A football will clash Friday in Dell Rapids.

The No. 3 Quarriers (4-1) host No. 4 West Central (4-1) in a Dak-XII matchup Friday night.

The Quarriers, winners of three straight, have cruised to a 4-1 record, with its only loss coming at the hands of Madison, 21-20, on Sept. 5. Since then, DR has beaten Rapid City Christian (43-8), Milbank (36-7) and No. 5 Tri-Valley (22-14) last Friday. The Quarriers run game has paced the offense this season with a senior duo leading the way. Kenny Swanson ran for 47 yards and a touchdown last week against Tri-Valley, while Ryan Stubbe pounded out 168 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries in the overtime victory.

For West Central, the Trojans haven’t lost since the season opener to Sioux Falls Christian (24-0) on Aug. 29. Since then, WC has beaten Belle Fourche (48-16), McCook Central-Montrose (35-6), Lennox (9-7) and Canton (41-19). WC averages 27 points per game while allowing just 14 points defensively.


Madison at Tri-Valley 

COLTON — Two one-loss Class 11A teams are looking for a bounce back win Friday night.

Class 11A No. 3 Madison (4-1) took its first loss last week to No.1 Sioux Falls Christian, 42-6, and now heads to Colton Friday against No. 5 Tri-Valley. The Bulldogs rattled off four consecutive wins before the loss last week, including No. 2 Dell Rapids (21-20) on Sept. 5. Madison averages 28 points per game. Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed 15 points per contest, including shutout wins over Belle Fourche (35-0) and Custer (43-0). Last week, quarterback Henry Veenhof completed three passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, but also threw three interceptions as well. Veenhof was without star wideout Shane Veenhof for the majority of the game.

Tri-Valley also comes into Friday’s contest with a chip on its shoulder after last week’s overtime loss to No. 2 Dell Rapids, 22-14. The Mustangs have the second-best scoring defense in all of Class 11A football, surrendering just nine points per contest, while averaging 30 points per game offensively (2nd best in Class 11A). Senior Brody Dybvig led the Mustangs ground game in the loss to the Quarriers, totaling 79 yards on nine carries.


Yankton at Sturgis Brown

STURGIS — Yankton is looking for its third Class 11AA ranked win of the season Friday night.

The Bucks (4-1) will make the long trip west to take on No. 5 Sturgis Brown (3-2) in Sturgis. Yankton most recently took down No. 3 Pierre in a nail-biting 35-28 win, and also has a win over No. 2 Huron, 41-24, in the season opener. The Bucks’ only loss came against Class 11AAA No. 4 Harrisburg, 49-3, two weeks ago. Yankton is the only team in 11AA football to average more than 30 points per game, currently sitting at a 39 ppg average heading into game six.

Sturgis Brown is looking to get back in the win column following back-to-back losses at the hands of No. 2 Huron (33-16) and Aberdeen Central (21-13). The Scoopers rattled off three wins to open the year over Brookings (26-21), Douglas (35-0) and Rapid City Stevens (41-10).


Sioux Falls Lincoln at Brandon Valley 

BRANDON — A rematch of last season’s 2024 Class 11AAA state championship takes place Friday night.

Top-ranked Sioux Falls Lincoln (5-0) travels to No. 2 Brandon Valley (5-0) at 6:30 p.m. in a rematch of last season’s 11AAA football championship.

The Patriots, who are defending their back-to-back titles, have rattled off five straight wins, including victories over No. 5 O’Gorman (50-31) and No. 3 Jefferson (57-36). Lincoln is averaging 51 points per game, the most in 11AAA, while giving up 24 points on defense.

BV heads into Friday’s contest with something to prove after starting the season 5-0, and looking every bit of a championship contender. The Lynx have just one ranked win this season over O’Gorman on Sept. 13, 43-15. BV is averaging 47 points per game on the year, the second most in 11AAA, while allowing just nine points per contest as well.
