Oct. 22 Volleyball Roundup - Gayville-Volin outlasts No. 2 Burke in five-set thriller

Gayville-Volin 3, Burke 2 

BURKE — Gayville-Volin outlasted Class B No. 2 Burke in a five-set marathon volleyball match on Tuesday. The set scores were 18-25, 25-19, 12-25, 27-25 and 18-16.

Gayville-Volin’s Maia Achen posted 16 kills, 22 digs, one block and four aces. Jolie Westrum added 13 kills and two assists. Taylor Hoxeng added 26 digs. Britton Scheetz posted 25 digs and 44 assists. Aliza Westrum logged three aces. 

For Burke, Emmie Hausmann had 18 kills and three aces. Kailee Frank finished with 16 kills and 24 digs. Paige Bull posted 14 kills and four blocks. Kyrie Matucha posted two aces and 38 digs. Emmy Spencer added 15 assists and two blocks.

Corsica-Stickney 3, Avon 2

CORSICA — Corsica-Stickney defeated Avon in a five-set thriller during Tuesday’s high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-22, 23-25, 11-25, 25-14, and 18-16.

CS’s Sophie Delange had 17 kills, 20 assists, and six blocks, Braylee Bordwyk tallied 16 kills, 20 assists, 13 digs, four blocks, and seven aces, Hadynn Johnson tallied nine kills, Cali Vanden Hoek recorded 34 digs, while Macayla Gerlach had 14 digs in the win.

Avon’s Rilyn Thury tallied 12 kills, 13 digs, one block, and one ace, Lila Vanderlei had 20 kills, 14 digs, and one ace, Lexi Vanderlei recorded six kills and two blocks, Brielle Voigt recorded 36 assists, while Macy Voigt had 15 digs in the loss.


Elk Point-Jefferson 3, Tri-Valley 0

ELK POINT — Elk Point-Jefferson swept Tri-Valley during Tuesday’s high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-12, 25-15, and 25-19.

EPJ’s Bentlee Kollbaum had 13 kills and 13 assists, Ashley Brewer tallied eight kills and four digs, Cera Schmitz recorded 16 digs and three aces, Courtney Brewer dished out 27 assists and six digs, while Kaitlyn VanRoekel tallied eight digs and two aces in the win.

TV’s Emery Pearson and Brooke Steineke each tallied four kills, Abby Wagner had four aces and seven assists, Macey Boese had eight digs, while Cheyenne Hanson tallied seven digs in the loss.


Chester Area 3, Sioux Valley 0

CHESTER — Class B No. 1 Chester Area swept Sioux Valley during Tuesday’s high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-23, 25-23, and 25-19.

Chester Area’s Lily Van Hal recorded 19 kills and 14 assists, Emmerson Eppard had 10 kills, Jacy Wolf tallied 16 assists, Gracie Huntimer had 20 digs, while Alexis Bauman had 12 kills and two aces in the win.

SV’s Adison Renkly recorded eight kills, five blocks, and 10 digs, Lacey Langland had six kills, Machaela Gerasch tallied 13 assists, while Sunny Hesby had seven assists and two aces.


Hitchcock-Tulare 3, Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 0

FORESTBURG — Class B No. 4 Hitchcock-Tulare swept Sanborn Central-Woonsocket to earn the 281 Conference title during Tuesday’s volleyball action. The set scores were 25-17, 25-11, and 25-19.

HT’s Katelyn Schroeder had 14 kills and nine digs, Lila Johnson tallied 19 assists and two aces, Ella Johnson had three kills and two aces, Gracyn Bixler tallied 11 assists and two aces, Cambree Hoekman had 24 digs, while Isabel Gilbert and Cora Hofer each had six blocks in the win.

SCW’s stats were not reported.


Winner 3, Wagner 0 

WINNER — Winner swept Wagner in Tuesday high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-11, 25-21 and 26-24.

Winner’s Livvy Audiss and Keelie Kuil finished with eight kills apiece. Lilly Barfuss added seven kills. Kuil had three solo blocks, while Payton Sargent had two solo blocks. Gracie Root and Barfuss had three total blocks. Alice Wilson and Kuil had 14 and 13 digs, respectively. Root dished out 25 assists.

Wagner’s Hannah Holzbauer finished with nine kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Ravyn Medricky had seven kills and 15 digs. Brylie Link logged six kills. Braxton Nedved had 21 assists. Libby Kotab posted 12 digs. Mateya Bruguier had two blocks.


Kimball-White Lake 3, Platte-Geddes 0

KIMBALL — Kimball-White Lake defeated Platte-Geddes in a three set sweep during Tuesday’s volleyball action. The set scores were 25-16, 25-14, and 25-16.

KWL’s Lindy Keihn had 15 kills, 10 digs, and six aces, Rylee McCord tallied 15 kills and 10 digs, Mariah Gosmire dished out 50 assists as well as three kills and two blocks, Summer Skluzak. and Sienna Gillen each had 15 digs while Kyza Johnson tallied eight kills and four blocks in the win

PG’s Kori VanDerWerff had eight kills, six digs, and two blocks, Kolbi Hoffman had 12 assists, nine digs, and two kills, Halle Sprik, Claire Maydew and Addison DeVries each had eight digs, while Taylor Schrank recorded three kills and three digs in the loss.


Northwestern 3, Groton Area 0

MELLETTE — Class B No. 5 Northwestern swept Groton Area in Tuesday’s high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-18, 25-16 and 26-24. 

Leading Northwestern was Ashley Haven with four aces, 15 kills a solo block and seven assisted blocks. Braelyn Satter added three aces, six kills while Ella Boekelheide had an ace, four kills, 24 assists, 12 digs and four assisted blocks. Tara Blachford and Nicolette Nickeson each had 10 digs for Northwestern. 

Jaedyn Penning led Groton Area with three aces, seven kills and 14 digs. Chesney Weber finished with two aces and 19 assists. Faith Traphagen had seven kills and Taryn Traphagen added five kills and a solo block. 


Linton-HMB (N.D.) 3, Mobridge-Pollock 0

MOBRIDGE — Mobridge-Pollock fell to Linton-HMB in a sweep during Tuesday’s volleyball action. The set scores were 25-18, 25-14, and 25-22.

Raelyn Aberle had eight kills and nine digs, Charley Henderson tallied seven kills and 13 digs, Sophia Overland tallied 12 assists and 10 digs, while Jacy Netterville had 18 assists in loss.


Estelline-Hendricks 3, Iroquois-Lake Preston 0

LAKE PRESTON — Estelline-Hendricks recorded a three set sweep over Iroquois-Lake Preston during Tuesday’s volleyball action. The set scores were 25-21, 25-23, and 25-16.

EH’s Brooke Johnson had nine kills and 13 digs, Presly Bury tallied seven kills, 15 assists, and three aces, Cambry Bury recorded 15 assists and two aces, Allie Duenwald tallied 38 assists, while Elyse Wegner had two blocks in the win.

ILP’s Brityn Davies tallied five kills and 22 assists, Hadlee Holt had five kills and three blocks, Trinity Pirlet recorded 33 digs, while Amelia Holland and Natalie Cundy each had four kills in the loss.


Florence-Henry 3, Deuel 2

HENRY — Florence-Henry outlasted Deuel in a five-set thriller during Tuesday’s volleyball action. The set scores were 20-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-15, and 15-10.

Rowan Raymer had 15 kills and four blocks, Andie Rislov tallied 30 digs, Ana Byer had 24 assists and two aces, Emery Schamber had three kills and four aces, while Ashlynn Vavruska tallied 10 assists in the win.

Deuel’s stats were not reported.


Baltic 3, Centerville 0

CENTERVILLE — Baltic knocked off Centerville in straight sets in Tuesday’s high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-16, 25-18 and 25-18. 

Althea Gust led Centerville with six kills and three digs. Emma Marshall added six kills, two blocks and a dig while Addison Buckenberg netted two kills and four blocks. Keira Austin finished with 15 assists and a block while Tessa Eide came up with a team leading 14 digs. 

Baltic stats were not reported.


Great Plains Lutheran 3, Britton-Hecla 0

BRITTON — Great Plains Lutheran swept Britton-Hecla in three sets in Tuesday’s high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15. 

Leading Britton-Hecla was Jaelee Grupe with six kills, nine assists and 15 digs. Daynika Zuehlke added two aces and 13 digs while Abigail Lee added six kills, an assist and five digs. Maddi Micko finished with four kills and six digs.

Great Plains Lutheran stats were not reported. 


Waverly-South Shore 3, Leola-Frederick Area 1

WAVERLY — Waverly-South Shore defeated Leola-Frederick Area in Tuesday high school volleyball action. The set scores were 22-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-23.

Waverly-South Shore stats were not reported.

For Leola-Frederick Area, Jill Ellwein finished with four aces, 15 kills and 33 digs. Kaitlyn Mueller posted 11 kills and 31 digs. Tayler Vetter added 31 assists. Alivia Little had 34 digs. Ella Kempf logged two kills. Zoe Cox had an ace. 


Sioux Falls Washington 3, Brandon Valley 2

BRANDON — Class AA No. 4 Sioux Falls Washington held on late to defeat Brandon Valley during Tuesday’s volleyball action. The set scores were 25-27, 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, and 20-18.

Washington’s stats were not reported.

BV’s Abby Gruber had 23 kills and four blocks, Jayauanna Stroh tallied 15 kills, Mya VanWesten recorded 25 digs, Logan McGuire had 32 assists and four blocks, while Riya Sheley tallied 21 assists in the loss.


Harrisburg 3, Sioux Falls Christian 1

SIOUX FALLS — Class AA No. 1 Harrisburg took down Class A No. 3 Sioux Falls Christian in four sets during Tuesday’s high school volleyball action. The set scores were 25-11, 25-17, 25-27, and 25-16.

Harrisburg’s Gabi Zachariasen had 12 kills and 10 digs, Kya Keegan had nine kills and six blocks, Bergen Stiff had nine kills and nine blocks, Maggie Meister tallied 16 digs, Kennedy Kokenge had three aces, Lindsay Langner tallied 10 digs, while Josalyn Samuels dished out 45 assists in the win.

SFC’s Jayla Overman had nine kills and two aces, Brietta Tims tallied eight kills and three digs, Addisen Barber dished out 24 assists, five kills, and four digs, Chloe Bosma had 12 digs, while Rachel Dieleman tallied six kills in the loss.
