Philip boys, Potter County and Sioux Falls Christian girls repeat as state cross-country champs

SIOUX FALLS — Champions were crowned at Saturday’s South Dakota state cross-country meet at Yankton Trail Park.

On the boys side, Philip captured its second straight Class B state championship. After Mitchell Christian’s Silas Holdeman won the individual title, the Scotties came in a pack.

Philip’s Wakely Burns (16:22.45) and Asher Peterson (16:43.32) placed second and fourth, respectively. Baylor Burns (16:59.15), Trey Larson (17:13.38) and Tukker Boe (17:20.49) placed seventh, ninth and 11th, respectively. The Scotties finished with 13 points, ahead of Mitchell Christian (37) and Northwestern (47).

On the girls side, Potter County won its second straight Class B state championship. Potter County’s Dannika Kaup (19:20.09) powered the team title with a third-place finish. Potter County’s Emma Schlachter (20:11.56) and Jadyn Ahlemeier (20:38.41) placed eighth and 11th, respectively. Arlington (43) and Lemmon (46) finished second and third, respectively. 

In the Class A portion, Hill City won its first boys state championship since 2007. Luke Rupert powered the team title with an individual championship, clocking in at 15:26.51. Hill City’s Leighton Aves (15:58.76) and Tate Grabow (16:02.47) placed fifth and eight, respectively. Hill City’s Brandon Escalante (16:24.29) placed 12th. Sioux Falls Christian (54) and Belle Fourche (66) placed second and third, respectively.

On the girls side, Sioux Falls Christian won its second straight Class A state championship. Sioux Falls Christian’s Corinne Braun (18:02.59) powered the team title with an individual championship. Jerica Glasser (18:40.25) and Natalie Smith (18:56.39) placed fifth and eight, respectively. Chamberlain (62) and Vermillion (70) placed second and third, respectively. 

In the Class AA portion, Brandon Valley (girls) and Sioux Falls Lincoln (boys) won team championships. Lincoln’s Miles Lechtenberg was the team’s top finisher, clocking in at 15:48.08 for a fifth-place finish.

Brandon Valley’s Mia Wentzy (18:12.46) powered the team title with a third-place finish.
