FORT PIERRE — With the short go-round of the South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals scheduled for Saturday, Pierre’s Makenzee Wheelhouse has been lights out in both the barrel racing and goat-tying competitions. 

On Friday, Wheelhouse laid down a 17.568 in the barrels, the second-best performance of the round, to earn 14 points. Entering Saturday’s finals, Wheelhouse trails only Buffalo’s Sattyn Wilson (58) with 53 points. In Friday’s second go-round of the goat tying, Wheelhouse ripped off a time of 7.140 seconds, the second fastest time of the round. Wheelhouse moved into third place in the goat typing (43 points) with only the goat tying short go-round to contest. 

Results from Friday, June 14:

Bareback Riding: 

Mobridge’s Taylon Carmody had the round of the day scoring (65) and winning the second go-round.The 15 points he earned vaulted him into the fourth position with only the short go-round remaining.

Highmore’s Talon Ping scored a 60 on Friday and leads the competition with 54 points, ahead of Blunt’s Talon Yellow Hawk (52) and Gregory’s Taos Weborg (50.5). Carmody (44) and St. Francis athlete Christopher Farmer (42.5) round out the top-five.

Barrel Racing: 

Buffalo freshman Sattyn Wilson continues to be a breakout athlete at these 2024 championships. Wilson won the first go-round and on Friday her time of 17.56 also won the second go-round. Entering the short-go, Wilson has 58 points, ahead of Pierre’s Wheelhouse (53) and Sturgis Arina Haugen (52). Wall’s Jayda Reinert (51) and Belle Fourche’s Shaine Weishaar (41) round out the top-five. 

Breakaway Roping: 

Belle Fouche’s Lainey Crago had the top time Friday, 2.460 seconds, to win the second go-round. After a no-time in the first go-round Kennebec’s Caysen Gran threw down a 2.660 second effort in Friday’s performance. Gran leads the competition with 42 points, ahead of New Underwood’s Jessica Caspers (39) and Hemingford’s Sophie Hruby (36). Pierre’s Ryen Sheppick (35) and Sturgis athlete Arina Haugen (33) round out the top five. 

Bull Riding:  

White River’s Hazin Schmidt continued his torrid 2024 bull riding season. On Friday, Schmidt had a season-high score of 72 points to win the second go-round and accumulate 15 more points. Entering the short-go, Schmidt has 59 points, ahead of Huron’s Brady Meyer (41) and Whitehorse’s Wynn Lawrence (35). Kyle’s Laddimer Clifford (34) and Faith’s Roy Antrim (16) round out the top-five. 

Goat Tying: 

Woonsocket’s Tierney Breen has been fast and consistent at the 2024 state finals. On Friday, Breen had a time of 7.05 seconds to win the second go-round and add 15 more points to an impressive season total. Breen leads the goat-tying competition with 56 points, ahead of Fruitdale’s Mataya Ward (55) and Pierre’s Wheelhouse (43). Hemingford’s Sophie Hruby (42) and Raylee Fagerhaug of Wessington Springs (36.5) round out the top-five. 

Pole Bending: 

Friday’s round belonged to Aurora’s Keylee Zancanella who won the second go-round with a time of 20.105. Arina Haugen has been dominating pole bending this season and on Friday her time of 20.249 was good enough for third place and 13 more points to her season total. Entering the short-go Haugen has 57 points, ahead of Buffalo’s Aspen Vining (48) and Wall’s Piper Cordes (40.5). Hemingford’s Sophie Hruby (39) and Hayes’s Tommie Marton are tied with 39 points and round out the top-five. 

Saddle Bronc: 

Isabel’s Rope Roghair continues to dominate this event and scored 66 on Friday to win the second go-round and earn 15 more points to an impressive season total. Entering Saturday, Roghair has 60 points, ahead of Backus’s Garit Hockett (48) and Pine Ridge’s Cole Waters (41). Hoven’s Ethan Johnson (40) and Belle Fourche’s Toarin Humble and Oshoto’s Curtis Riesland, both with 30 points, round out the top-five.

Steer Wrestling: 

Scotland’s Kade Owens had the top time Friday with an incredibly fast effort of 4.740 seconds. That time moved Owens into sixth place with a very tight leaderboard just above him. Springfield’s Treyvan Talsma and Smithwick’s Gabe Glines are tied for the lead with 48 points, just ahead of Kadoka’s Dalton Porch and Buffalo’s Braden Routier who both have 43 points. Eagle Butte’s Braydon Terveen-Smith is in fifth place with 41 points. 

Team Roping: 

Friday’s round belonged to Pierre’s Tristan Spencer and Witten’s Jack Anderson who won the second go-round with a time of 7.00 seconds. The Belle Fourche tandem of Rance Bowden and Sern Weishaar had a run of 12.06 seconds Friday and picked up eight more points for their season total. The pair lead the field with 52 points, ahead of Belle Fourche’s Jet Jensen and Faith’s Drew Harper (49) and Wall’s Brand Hilgenkamp and Hermosa’s Slate Suhn (38). Sisseton’s Sidney Johnson and Aurora’s Keylee Zancanella (36) and Martin’s William Waln and Philips Christoher Lurz (30) round out the top-five.

Tiedown Roping:

Friday’s round belonged to Pierre’s Tristan Spencer who won the second go-round with a time of 10.450 seconds. Entering Saturday’s short go-round Blunt’s Paden Belkham leads with 56 points, ahead of Kadoka’s Dalton Porch (50) and Belle Fourche’s Rance Bowden (41). Colome’s Seth Heath (36) and Belle Fourche’s Sern Weishaar (32) round out the top-five.
