Pierre Governors capture first-ever girls tennis state championship

RAPID CITY — The Pierre High School girls tennis team made school history on Tuesday.

The Governors captured their first-ever state tennis title, finishing with 506.5 points at the Class A tournament. St. Thomas More (397) and Sioux Falls Christian (388) were second and third, respectively. 

Pierre’s Kara Weiss (Flight 2) and Jocelyn Corrales (Flight 4) picked up singles championships. 

In Flight 2 singles, Weiss defeated Sioux Falls Christian’s Ellie Lounsbery (6-4, 6-0) in the championship match. In Flight 4 singles, Corrales topped Vermillion’s Kasey Hanson (6-1, 7-5) in the championship match. 

In Flight 1 singles, Pierre’s Sydney Tedrow finished second to St. Thomas More’s Athena Francilisco (6-3, 6-0) in the finals. 

In Flight 6 singles, Pierre’s Caitlin Ott finished second to Sioux Falls Christian’s Emily Westenberg (6-3, 6-0) in the championship match.

In Flight 3 singles, Pierre’s Marlee Shorter topped Sioux Falls Christian’s Karly Doom (10-7) to earn third-place honors. 

In Flight 5 singles, Pierre’s Kourtney Walti defeated Huron’s Say Ma (10-4) to finish in third place. 

Rapid City Christian’s Allison Hill was the Flight 3 singles champ, defeating St. Thomas More’s Katelyn Denholm (6-4, 6-2) in the title match. 

Sioux Falls Christian’s Anna Westenberg won the Flight 5 singles, finishing with a 7-5, 6-4 win over St. Thomas More’s Amity Strand in the finals. 

In doubles action, Tedrow/Weiss won Flight 1 and Corrales/Ott won Flight 3. In Flight 2 doubles play, St. Thomas More’s Athena Francilisco and Shriya Gangineni won the state championship.
