GILLETTE, Wyo. — Pine Ridge’s Marvin Richard III scored his 2,000th career point on Friday.

The high-scoring senior hit the milestone in the Thorpes’ 54-46 win over Buffalo (Wyo.) at the Remax Invitational. A 6-foot-1 guard, Richard III scored a game-high 27 points. 

Richard III is the 47th South Dakota high school boys basketball player to score 2,000 or more points. 

Richard III began his senior campaign with a 33-point performance in Pine Ridge’s 60-57 loss against Campbell County (Wyo.) on Thursday.

Richard III, a two-time Class A all-state first-team selection, averaged 34.7 points, six rebounds and 3.8 assists per game last season. He had six games with 40 or more points, including a Class A boys basketball record 62-point performance. Richard III also set the Lakota Nation Invitational boys basketball single-game record (57). He nailed 87 3-pointers.

Richard III will play college basketball at Division I South Dakota next season.
