Three floor generals and three polished big men make up this year’s Class A boys basketball all-state first team, which was chosen by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.

The Class A all-state first team features Sioux Falls Christian’s Griffen Goodbary, Dakota Valley’s Jaxson Wingert, Sioux Valley’s Alec Squires, Hamlin’s Easton Neuendorf, Pine Ridge’s Marvin Richard III and Groton Area’s Lane Tietz.

A 6-foot-10 junior forward, Goodbary is the Class A player of the year and the Gatorade South Dakota boys basketball player of the year. He’s making his first all-state appearance.

Goodbary, a skilled and athletic player, averaged 20.2 points, seven rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He guided the Chargers to a Class A runner-up finish. Goodbary recently received scholarship offers from South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota.

A 6-foot-7 senior center, Wingert capped off an outstanding career for Dakota Valley, where he was part of two straight Class A state championships in 2022 and ‘23. Wingert averaged 27.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game this season. He finished his career with 1,384 points and 562 rebounds.

Squires, a bouncy and athletic 6-foot-10 forward, was a second-team all-stater last season and continues a long line of traditional Cossack big men. This season, he averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Class A consolation champs. He is Sioux Valley’s all-time leader in rebounds (814), blocked shots (152) and dunks (78). A ferocious dunker, Squires slammed down five dunks in one game and 37 total in one season. He also snagged a school-record 22 rebounds in one game. Squires, who will play college basketball at South Dakota State University, scored 1,127 career points.

A 5-foot-11 junior guard, Neuendorf was a third-team all-stater in 2023. A natural point guard, Neuendorf piloted Hamlin to its first state championship since 1983. He averaged 15.1 points, 7.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game, while logging 64 steals this season. Neuendorf has tallied 968 points, 416 assists, 249 rebounds and 219 steals after his junior season.

A 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, Richard III is the youngest player on the first team and is making his first all-state appearance. Richard III guided the Thorpes to the Lakota Nation Invitational championship and a sixth-place finish at the state tournament. He averaged 23.8 points, 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. He scored his 1,000th career point during his sophomore campaign.

A 5-foot-11 senior guard, Tietz is making his all-state selection. The point guard paced the Tigers to a seventh-place finish at the state tournament, where he received the Class A Spirit of Su. Tietz averaged 21.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists per game, while he nailed 67 3-pointers. A future Dakota State University men’s basketball player, Tietz scored 1,553 career points.
