The Flandreau girls basketball team is focused on the process.

Last season, the Fliers broke through and reached their first Class A girls basketball tournament since 1997. Flandreau, which had no seniors a season ago, is again eyeing a state tourney berth.

But instead of worrying about the end goal, the Fliers are attacking the day-to-day grind.

“We don’t really talk about the state tournament,” Flandreau coach Megan Severtson said. “We talk a lot about improvement, execution and preparation. I think when I can get them to focus on that, it takes some of the pressure off of us.”

In 2023, the Fliers placed sixth at the Class A girls basketball tournament and that experience has sparked this season’s undefeated start.

“It’s huge for this group of girls to have made it to state last year,” Severtson said. “Just because it’s not looming over their heads. They have been there, they got that experience and now they get to enjoy this season.”

They certainly have done that. Flandreau (19-0) is one of two undefeated teams still remaining in Class A girls, with Mahpiya Luta (18-0) the other perfect team in the class.

The Fliers and Crusaders are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the last South Dakota Prep Media Basketball Poll. Sioux Falls Christian, Sisseton and Tea Area round out the top-five teams.

While Flandreau has emerged as the No. 1 ranked team, the class is oozing with parity and unpredictability as the postseason looms.

“There’s so many teams in Class A that could potentially win the thing,” Severtson said. “I think as a coach you just have to really focus on your girls. I can’t control what the other teams do.”

The Fliers are headlined by 6-foot-2 Claire Sheppard, a future Jackrabbit. The all-state guard recently became the all-time leading scorer in Flandreau girls basketball history.

She’s also handled more on-ball duties this season, while continuing to score at a high level. Recently, she logged 18 points, four rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists in a 65-46 win over Lyman at the DWU/Culver’s Classic in Mitchell.

“It’s been really fun to watch her this season take ownership of the point guard position and take ownership of controlling the basketball and controlling the game.”

In addition to Sheppard, the Fliers trot out a lineup filled with size and athleticism. Flandreau also starts Lily Klein (5-11), Lizzle Pavlis (5-11), Sadie Iott (5-8) and Claire’s eighth-grade sister Morgan Sheppard (6-2). Ella Hoffman (5-8) and Hannah Krull (5-11) are regulars off the bench.

The taller lineup carries over to the defensive end, where Flandreau is surrendering a Class A low 30-points per game.

“I think this team has really bought into our defense and the importance of coming each night and being able to rely on our defense,” Severtson said. “There’s going to be nights where of course you can’t score, but I really feel like with this group, they have so much pride in what they do that defensive end.”

Flandreau will host Baltic on Tuesday in its regular-season finale.

Wilmot’s Addison Heinje erupts for school-record 50 points
