Prolific scorers, dominant post players highlight Class B all-state first team

Three prolific scoring guards and three formidable post players headline this year’s Class B boys basketball all-state first team, which was chosen by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association. 

The all-state first team features White River’s Nic Marshall, Castlewood’s Bryon Laue, Viborg-Hurley’s Nick Hanson, Canistota’s Tage Ortman, Faith’s Jackson Schauer and Howard’s Kolt Koepsell. 

A 6-foot-1 senior guard, Marshall is the Class B player of the year and is making his second all-state selection. He was a third-team honoree last season. Marshall guided the Tigers to their 19th straight Class B boys basketball qualification, where they placed fourth this season. He was named the Class B Spirit of Su at the state tourney. Marshall averaged 26.2 points, 4.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game, while he eclipsed 1,000 career points this season. He will play college basketball at Briar Cliff University. 


A 6-foot-9 junior center, Laue anchored the paint for the Warriors, who placed third at the state tourney. Laue logged 15.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this season. Laue recorded several double-doubles, collected 26 rebounds in a game and hammered down numerous slam dunks. Laue has scored 967 career points through his junior season. 

A 6-foot-6 junior post, Hanson was a second-team all-state selection last season. Hanson powered the Cougars with 23.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, while leading the Cougars to a seventh-place finish at the state tourney. Hanson has logged 1,005 points, 520 rebounds, 98 blocked shots, 72 assists and 41 steals during his career.

A 6-foot senior guard, Ortman was a third-team all-stater in 2023. Ortman registered 23.6 points, 6.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game this season for the Hawks. Ortman set the Canistota single-season scoring record with 487 points this season. He also tied the school record for 3-pointers in a season (64). Ortman will play college basketball at Dakota State University. 

A 6-foot-1 senior guard, Schauer was a second-team all-stater in 2023. This season, Schauer totaled 25 points, six rebounds and four assists per game. He finished as Faith’s all-time leading scorer with 1,827 career points, while he recorded 588 rebounds and 405 assists. He’s a career 37% 3-point shooter and a career 88% free-throw shooter. 

A 6-foot-8 senior center, Koepsell is making his first all-state selection. Koepsell averaged 14.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game for the state champs. He finished his career with 1,096 points, 724 rebounds and 114 blocked shots.
