RAPID CITY — Rapid City Christian made school history on Friday.

The Comets swept Miller and will play in their first-ever state volleyball championship against Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday. Rapid City Christian swept the Rustlers, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-14.

Saturday will also be the first-ever state championship berth for Rapid City Christian in any sport.

“It’s like a dream come true,” Rapid City Christian senior hitter Ana Egge said. “It’s a goal we’ve had since the beginning of the season. So just getting to finally get there and just realize it’s here, that’s just an amazing feeling.”

The Comets (35-5) built big leads in each of their sets against Miller, which was looking for its first state championship berth since 2018.

“It’s huge,” Egge said. “We talk about point spread and keeping our point spread just decreases the stress on our side. That’s just something we really strive to do is keep that point differential.”

The Comets also used their size advantage to help put away the Rustlers (29-7). Rapid City Christian recorded three solo blocks, with Egge, Maddie Altstiel and Chloe Weber each recording blocks.

“We had to be big at the net and big blocks and everything,” Egge said. “I think we really took care of that tonight and we really just went up and did the job we needed to do.”

Egge led the Comets with 18 kills and seven digs. Sophie DeWitt added 15 digs. Altstiel and Weber posted five kills apiece. Weber added eight digs. Faith King finished with 11 digs and 31 assists.

For Miller, Jolie Palmer finished with 13 kills. Aleah Schlechter added 10 kills and five digs. Paige Werdel added six kills, while Shaylee Anderberg added five kills and seven digs. Journey Palmer posted nine digs. Heather Resel recorded 24 assists.

Up next, the Comets will face a tall task in the Chargers. Sioux Falls Christian has won six straight Class A state championships.

“I think a big thing we focus on this year is being able to play free for the glory of God because we just have that higher purpose we are playing for,” Egge said. “So just being able to play free really helps us going into games.”
