Rapid City Stevens alum and Oregon redshirt sophomore Simeon Birnbaum set a new NCAA record in the 1500 meter run at the Oregon Team Invitational on Saturday.

Birnbaum ran a time of 3:31.69 in the event at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Birnbaum's time broke the previous record of 3:33.02 set by Villanova's Liam Murphy in 2025.

Birnbaum, who is the defending Big Ten champion in the 5,000 meters last season with a 13:31.87, finished third at 1500 meters at the conference meet last season.

So far this season, Birnbaum has posted a personal best of 13:19.73 in the 5000 meters winning the Stanford Invitational on April 3 where he was recognized as the Big Ten Men's Co-Track Athlete of the Week.

Birnbaum's time also broke the meet record, eclipsing the previous mark of 13:23.61 set by Stanford's Ky Robinson in 2022.
