SIOUX FALLS — Early Saturday morning the Class B boys state track champions, Gregory got a big boost from their secret weapon — the javelin.

Rylan Peck won the first-ever Class B javelin title (159-7) while teammate Rane Kenzy was second (158-1) and teammate Trey Murray finished sixth (146-7).

“With the way the wind was today we all just tried to keep our throws really low,” Peck said.

Gregory entered the meet with their top three throwers in the championship flight. The Gorillas were expected to score big points but exceeded expectations by racking up 21 points.

“We talked about it this morning but I don’t think any of us felt much pressure,” Peck said.

With javelin being a first-year event scored in Class B the three friends decided to try something new together.

“We all play baseball and football together so we thought this would be fun,” Peck said. “I think playing baseball really helps with the sport.”

As it turns out the javelin was crucial in helping the Gorillas win the Class B team title. Gregory edged Freeman Academy/Marion by two points for the team title with the trio of javelin throwers combining for 21 points.

Peck is a standout pitcher and baseball player for Gregory. After joining the South Dakota Army National Guard this summer Peck hopes to play baseball at South Dakota State.
