SD Basketball Coaches Hall of Shrine to induct four men
Burke's Ron Determan will be inducted into the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Shrine.

Four men are set to be inducted into the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Shrine at upcoming state high school girls and boys tournaments March 7-9 and March 14-16.

The new inductees include Tom Lee of Roslyn, Ron Determan of Burke, Bob Lowery of Pierre and Mike Redmond of Brookings.

Here are the bios of the new inductees:

Tom Lee

Lee coached at Roslyn High School for 31 years and took the Vikings to back-to-back trips to the state Class B boys basketball tournament in 2000 and 2001, the only state-tourney appearances in school history.


After Roslyn School close in May of 2010, Lee went to Waubay High School until he retired in May of 2013. A history and physical education teacher, Lee also coached football and track.


Lee earned Region 1 Basketball Coach of the Year honors three times and also was named the Region 1 Football Coach of the Year. In 34 years, he compiled a win-loss of 430 wins and 290 losses as a basketball coach.


Tom and Debbie, his wife of 44 years have two children (Tiffany Lee Coyne of Harrisburg and Tyler Lee of Roslyn) and six grandchildren.

Ron Determan

Determan has taught for 45 years and coached for 48 years in South Dakota. he began his teaching and coaching career at Wagner in January of 1976 before coaching boys and girls basketball and girls track for five years at Geddes.


In 1981, Ron took a position at Burke, where he served as the head boys basketball coach for five years, assistant boys basketball coach for 11 years, head girls basketball coach for 41 years, track and field coach for 33 years as well as a short stint as a cross country coach. He's coached Colome's girls basketball teams the past two years.


As a girls basketball coach, he's accumulated 517 wins and led Burke to the 1998 state Class B tournament. He has been selected as a Region Coach of the Year in both girls basketball and track multiple times, coached in the South Dakota High School All-Star Girls Basketball game twice and received the John Wooden Legacy Award in 2023.


In addition, Determan has served as a greenskeeper at the Burke Golf Course since 1982 and also coached Teener baseball for 29 years, compiling 585 wins with 16 state-tournament appearances.


Among the highlights of his career has been the opportunity to coach his five children (Chris, Jeff, Brian, Michelle, and Jay). He is very appreciative for the support he's received from his wife Jan throughtout his career. The Determans celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last summer.

Bob Lowery

Lowery, a 1972 graduate of Superior (Neb.) High School who received a Bachelor of Science degree Peru State College (Neb.) in1976 and earned a Master of Science degree from South Dakota State University in 1982.


He served as a graduate assistant cross country and track coach at SDSU during the 1976-77 school year before becoming the head cross country and track coach at Vermillion High School in 1977, a position he held for 17 years. In 1985, he also became the school's athletic director and was the chairman for numerous district and region basketball tournaments.


In 1994, Lowery became the Assistant Executive Director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association for boys' athletics. One of his many duties included directing the state basketball tournaments. He retired from the SDHSAA in 2012 but has remained active with basketball by handling the shot clock duties for the home games at Pierre High School.


Lowery's greatest enjoyment during his years with the SDHSAA was the relationships he developed with school administrators, officials and coaches across the state. Many of those relationships continue today.


Bob and his Diane have four children (Brian and his wife Jennifer of Tea; Brandon and his wife Crystal of Pierre; Brad and his wife Rachel of Sioux Falls; and Brittany and her husband Jeff of Pierre) and 12 grandchidren.

Mike Redmond

Redmond began officiating high school basketball in 1975 and over the next 28 years, he worked several boys and girls district, region and state basketball tournaments. He also officiated two state championship football games.

Throughout the years, he continued to work high school games and in 1980 began officiating college basketball, During his career, he worked games for the North Central Conference, South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and Great Plains Athletic Conference.


In 1996, Redmond was awarded the National Distinguished Contributor Award by the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association. He was also a district leader and observer of officials both at the high school and college level.


One of the most rewarding things that Mike has been involved with as an official is the Michael J Entringer Scholarship Classic for the past 30 years. Prior to this year’s classic, the Entringer Classic had awarded more than $1.1 million in scholarships to area student-athletes.
