The 2025 Class B state amateur baseball tournament site will be determined Friday.

The South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association commissioners and officers will vote between two finalists — Mitchell and Brandon — for the 2025 state tournament site.

The SDABA sent out proposal requests to host the 2025 state tourney six months ago, and Mitchell and Brandon Valley were the only two baseball associations to submit proposals, said president Dale Weber.

“That will be the main crux of the meeting is just that vote,” Weber said. “We will of course have a lot of discussion on that because from what I’ve read from the proposal, both Mitchell and Brandon Valley did a great job in presenting what they have from their ballparks.”

The vote will comprise 13 commissioners and officers, with the majority vote determining the 2025 site.

The SDABA officers are Weber, Philip’s Richard Rockafellow (vice president) and Kennebec’s Herb Sundall (secretary-treasurer), while the commissioners include Clark’s Brock Greenfield, Aberdeen’s Ace Boschee, Chamberlain’s Brock Sundall, Salem’s Randy Sabers, Parkston’s Dave Roth, Menno’s Ken Bruckner, Vermillion’s Dan Grasser, Rapid City’s Daryl Deneke, Brookings’ Aaron Jorenby and Aberdeen’s Scott Healy.

Mitchell, a regular and popular site with fans, is again hosting the 2023 state tournament and will host the 2024 event. Mitchell has hosted 34 state tournaments since 1975.

In 2024, the Mitchell Baseball Association will further improve Cadwell Park, completing a new roof covering the main grandstands and a new press box.

“Mitchell has never let us down in regard to hosting the state amateur tournament,” Weber said. “They’ve always done a terrific job here and this year is no exception. We are having good crowds and Cadwell Park is a good ballpark and the people enjoy coming here and so Mitchell has always been in the running for hosting a state tournament.”

Brandon Valley, meanwhile, has never hosted a state amateur baseball tournament. In 2018, Brandon Valley completed construction on its new ballpark, First National Bank Field at Aspen Park. The facility was equipped with new grandstands, press box and artificial turf in the infield.

The ballpark has hosted a handful of tournaments since completion and it hosted the 2021 Class A American Legion state tournament.

“From all reports we got back, that they did a good job hosting and I believe that’s one of the reasons they wanted to throw their hat into the ring this year,” Weber said. “They’ve had some committee people and so forth that thought they could do a good job for the amateur as well.”
