SDHSAA releases proposed alignments for 2024-25, 2025-26 seasons

The South Dakota High School Activities Association released its proposed alignments for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. The proposed alignments by sport and region are HERE.

The proposed alignments will be heard for a first reading at the SDHSAA Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 28, with a second reading scheduled for the April 17 Board of Directors meeting.

Of note, boys and girls basketball will see a shift in the number of teams in each class. In Class AA, Tea Area is jumping up from Class A and there will be 20 teams in the largest class.

In Class A, there could be seven teams in the eight regions for a total of 56 teams. Britton-Hecla and Scotland-Menno are both moving up from Class B. Britton-Hecla will be in Region 1A, while Scotland-Menno is in Region 5A.

In Class B, there will be 10 teams in each region for a total of 80 teams. In total, 10 teams will drop from Class A to Class B: Tiospa Zina, Waubay/Summit, Estelline/Hendricks, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, Parkston, Kimball/White Lake, North Central, Bennett County, Dupree and McLaughlin. 

In football, Class 11AAA will have nine teams and Class 11AA will have 11 teams. 

In Class 11A, Rapid City Christian and Tri-Valley are moving up from Class 11B for a total of 14 teams in the class. 

In Class 11B, there will be 24 teams as Beresford and Chamberlain will drop down from Class 11A. 

In nine-man football, there will be 23 teams in each of the three classes. In Class 9AA, Hill City, Redfield, Scotland-Menno, Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian and Waubay/Summit are new to the class. 

In Class 9A, Dupree, Gayville-Volin, Howard, Ipswich, Lemmon/McIntosh, North Central, Platte-Geddes, Potter County, Wall and White River are new to the class. 

In Class 9B, Burke, Canistota, Colman-Egan, Iroquois/Lake Preston, Newell, Northwestern, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland are dropping down from Class 9A. Sioux Falls Lutheran and Wilmot are also joining the class. Wilmot previously formed a football co-op with Waubay/Summit called Dakota Hills. Sioux Falls Lutheran is offering football for the first time. 

In volleyball, the three classes are the same as basketball, with one exception. Scotland/Menno, which will co-op in girls basketball, will be separate in volleyball. They will both be in Region 4B for volleyball. 

In wrestling, Class A will include 35 teams and Class B will consist of 64 teams. Sisseton

Baltic, Flandreau and Scotland/Menno will move into Class B. Sisseton and Flandreau dropped from Class A, while Scotland will co-op with Menno. Baltic previously didn’t offer wrestling.
