Sept. 19 Football Roundup - No. 2 Huron pulls away from No. 3 Sturgis, improves to 3-1 on the season

Huron 33, Sturgis 16

HURON — Huron improved to 3-1 with a Friday high school football win over Sturgis. 


Howard 54, Canistota 8

HOWARD — Class 9A No. 5 Howard racked up 388 yards rushing en route to a Friday high school football win over Canistota.

Howard’s Kolt Becker rushed for 269 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. Korbin Shumaker, Drew Maier and Gabe Miller rushed for touchdowns. Becker had two interceptions on defense. Thomas Halverson had seven tackles. 

For Canistota, Nate Merrill had 82 passing yards and one touchdown. Easton Miller had 65 yards receiving and one touchdown reception. Prayden Acheson had 27 yards rushing. Koda Popkes posted six tackles. 


Wagner 49, Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan 34

WAGNER — Gannon Knebel powered Class 11B No. 2 Wagner to a Friday night high school football win over Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan. 

Wagner’s Gannon Knebel rushed for 306 yards and six touchdowns, while he passed for 129 yards and one touchdown. Payne Petry rushed for 69 yards. Shea Kjeldgaard hauled in 111 yards receiving, while he had a sack and a forced fumble on defense. Carlos Galindo had a touchdown reception and eight tackles on defense.

BEE stats were not reported. 


Elk Point-Jefferson 56, Baltic 6

ELK POINT — Class 11B No. 1 Elk Point-Jefferson in Friday high school football action. 

EPJ’s Beau Schmitz rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Schmitz, Brody VanRoekel and Anthony Tatro had rushing touchdowns. Levi Hanson passed for 85 yards and one touchdown. Aiden Hammitt hauled in a touchdown reception and had a kickoff return for a touchdown. The Huskies had four interceptions on defense. 

Baltic’s Gavin Skotvold passed for 82 yards and a touchdown. Ben Erickson hauled in a touchdown reception and 57 yards receiving. 


Scotland 53, Burke 14

SCOTLAND — Scotland/Menno built a 45-0 halftime lead en route to a Friday high school football win over Burke. 

SM’s Izayah Ulmer rushed for 117 yards on five carries and scored two touchdowns. Ulmer added 187 yards passing and three touchdowns. Ryder Hauck and Jarret Andretta rushed for touchdowns. Hunter Clark hauled in three catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Brayden Kludt had nine tackles and Erick Buechler posted two interceptions. 

For Burke, Jake DeLong and Ryggan Lambley rushed for touchdowns. Brody Indahl passed for 99 yards. DeLong had 45 yards receiving. Ezekiel Koenig posted seven tackles.  


North Central 33, Northwestern 0

EUREKA — North Central racked up 277 total yards en route to a Friday high school football win over Northwestern.

NC’s Jade Jacobs rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Harrison Beyers rushed for 30 yards and one touchdown. Jared Wherry hauled in 63 yards receiving and one touchdown. Kobe Wherry passed for 79 yards and a touchdown. Jared Wherry and Reuben Blanco had six tackles and one sack apiece. Jared Wherry had an interception return for a touchdown, while Donovan Nelson had an interception. 

Northwestern totaled 50 yards. Jarren Haven passed for 23 yards and Connor Orr had 10 yards rushing.


Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy 38, Alcester-Hudson 19

ALCESTER — Class 9AA No. 1 Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy pulled away from Class 9A No. 3 Alcester-Hudson for a Friday high school football win. FMFA totaled 515 yards.

FMFA’s Luke Peters rushed for 193 yards on 17 carries and scored a touchdown. Riley Tschetter rushed for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Karter Weber had 40 yards rushing and a touchdown. Tschetter completed 10-of-18 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. David Walter hauled in seven catches for 125 yards and a touchdown reception. Tayden Kerrigan posted two interceptions on defense. Jackson Donlan and Easton Tschetter had five tackles apiece.

For Alcester-Hudson, Tommy Walth passed for 182 yards and two touchdown passes. Karzen Sommervold added a passing touchdown. Darin Dykstra had 33 yards rushing on 13 carries. Jackson Meyer had 81 yards receiving. Dykstra, Owen Serck and Andrew Bovill had touchdown catches. Dykstra posted 7.5 tackles and an interception. 


Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 20, Winner 6

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central pulled away from Class 11B No. 5 Winner in Friday high school football action.

Luke Larson completed 9-of-20 passes for 125 yards and two touchdown passes. Colby Flowers hauled in 74 yards receiving and two touchdown catches. Larson added 58 rushing yards and another score. Flowers added 7.5 tackles and an interception. 

For Winner, Quincy Phillips had 105 passing yards and one passing touchdown. Zac Olson hauled in 42 yards receiving and one touchdown catch. Olson had 33 yards rushing. Seth Heath had 11 tackles and Carter McKenzie intercepted a pass.


Iroquois-Lake Preston 44, Sunshine Bible Academy 0

MILLER — Lucas Peskey ran for four touchdowns as Iroquois-Lake Preston blanked Sunshine Bible Academy during Friday’s high school football action.

Peskey finished with 16 carries for 194 yards and four rushing touchdowns, Ben Curd added 10 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns as well. Aiden Query recorded an interception while Tade Menzel, Rayson TImm and Keaton Neuharth combined for four fumble recoveries.

For SBA, Tarrence Mickelson had nine carries for 23 yards, Carter Crump tallied 10 carries for 15 yards, Seth Konechne had nine tackles while Toby Mickelson recorded seven tackles in the loss.


Gayville-Volin 52, Irene-Wakonda 14

IRENE — Gayville-Volin coasted past Irene-Wakonda in Friday high school football action. The Raiders rushed for 316 yards. 

Will Fairley rushed for 125 yards on 13 carries and scored three touchdowns. Wyatt Mehlhaf rushed for 114 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. Carter Barron added two rushing touchdowns. Jeremiah Gustad passed for 31 yards and one touchdown. Barron added a touchdown reception and two interceptions on defense. Fairley had 7.5 tackles. 

IW’s Noah Hansen had a 69-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Brody Johnke had a rushing touchdown. Johnke rushed for 41 yards and passed for 11 yards. Christian Putman posted 11 yards receiving and had an interception.

 

Deuel 20, Groton Area 0

CLEAR LAKE — Deuel blanked Groton Area during Friday’s high school football action.

Gavin Kloos ran 19 times for 85 yards and one touchdown on an interception. Carson Marko had a one-yard touchdown run, Owen Haas tallied 15 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Oliver Fieber caught three passes for 42 yards in the win.

For GA, Anthony Tracy tallied nine carries for 28 yards, Asher Johnson had 12 attempts for 17 yards passing while Connor Glines tallied 11 tackles on defense in the loss.


Madison 34, Vermillion 15

VERMILLION — Henry Veenhof passed for four touchdowns as Class 11A No. 2 Madison defeated Vermillion in Friday high school football action.

Veenhof completed 16-of-26 passes for 213 yards and four touchdown passes. Shane Veenhof hauled in 114 yards receiving and three touchdown receptions. Myles Schneider had a touchdown reception. Caleb Hodges rushed 45 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Petterson had six tackles, while Shane Veenhof and Sawyer Hegg had interceptions. 

For Vermillion, Hayden Christopherson passed for 193 yards and one touchdown. Elijah Lara had 81 yards receiving and one touchdown reception. Cameron Bottolfson had 10 tackles. 


Tea Area 38, Douglas 6

BOX ELDER — Class 11AA No. 5 Tea Area rolled past Douglas in Friday night high school football action. 

Tea Area’s Mitch Grant rushed for 59 yards on seven carries and one touchdown. Daschle Lowery passed for 50 yards and a touchdown. Griffin Wiebenga hauled in 79 receiving yards and six receptions for three touchdowns. Braeden Gniffke posted eight tackles and one sack. 

For Douglas, Paiden Sandal rushed for 21 yards and a touchdown. Sandal added 14 tackles on defense.
