Sioux Falls Christian’s Brant Wassenaar and Pine Ridge’s Marvin Richard III headline this year’s Class A all-state boys basketball team, as selected by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.

Wassenaar and Richard III were joined on the first team with West Central’s Connor Mebius, Vermillion’s Trey Hansen, Hamlin’s Jackson Wadsworth and Clark/Willow Lake’s Sully Felberg.

Wassenaar was named the Class A player of the year, totaling the most all-state votes.

The 6-foot-4 junior guard is making his second-straight all-state first team appearance leading the Chargers to a runner-up finish at the Class A state tournament. Wassenaar averaged 22.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game this season.

Wassenaar is a highly-touted recruit with offers to Division I colleges South Dakota State, South Dakota and Drake.

Richard III, a 6-foot-1 senior, closes out an illustrious career with his third all-state first-team honor. The high-scoring guard averaged 30.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game this season, including 92 steals.

Richard III also broke the state’s single-game scoring record this season with 73 points against Lakota Tech, and ended his career with 2,689 points, the sixth most in South Dakota boys basketball history.

Mebius, a 5-foot-10 elusive junior guard, guided West Central to its first state championship since 2001 this season. Mebius averaged 17.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game in his junior campaign.

Hansen, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, powered Vermillion to a 16-6 record this season. Hansen averaged 25.9 points, eight rebounds and 6.1 assists per game with 68 steals this season.

Hansen is a three-time all-stater, and ended his career as Vermillion’s all-time leading scorer with 1,624 career points. He also totaled 587 rebounds, 332 assists, and a school-record 227 steals.

Wadsworth, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, guided Hamlin to another appearance in the Class A state tournament, taking third place. Wadsworth averaged 21.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game this season. Wadsworth was the Class A Spirit of Su recipient. 

The future Northern State men’s basketball player ended his career with 1,300 points, 348 rebounds, 279 assists, shooting 48% from beyond the arc.

Felberg, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, is making his second appearance on the all-state team after earning second team honors a season ago. Felberg averaged 15.6 points, seven rebounds and 2.3 assists per game this season, guiding Clark/Willow Lake to a fourth-place finish at the Class A state tournament.
