South Dakotans Ryen Sheppick, Gabe Glines and Arina Haugen shine at Friday's National High School Finals Rodeo

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Three South Dakotans earned first-place finishes in the respective performances at Friday’s National High School Finals Rodeo.

Smithwick’s Gabe Glines, Pierre’s Ryen Sheppick and Sturgis’ Arina Haugen all won their performances to highlight the South Dakota action on Friday. 

In the boys cutting, Glines scored a 146 to score the top mark in Friday’s evening performance. He’s currently tied for sixth in the average with 291 points. 

In the breakaway roping, Sheppick and Haugen both earned top marks in both Friday’s performances. In the morning performance, Sheppick ran a 2.42 to earn the top time. In the evening performance, Haugen ran a 2.62 to secure the top mark. 

Haugen is currently second in the breakaway roping average with 5.66 seconds. Haugen is currently No. 1 in the All-Around Rookie Cowgirl standings with 560 points, 190 points ahead of second-place Kinley Follman (North Dakota). Haugen is also fifth in the All-Around Cowgirl standings with 560 points. 

Isabel’s Rope Roghair (saddle bronc riding) also earned a top-five finish in his performance. He scored a 67.5 in Friday’s evening performance, a third-place finish. 

Highmore’s Talon Ping (bareback riding) scored a fourth-place finish in his performance, finishing with a 59 on Friday morning. 

In the boys team standings, South Dakota is currently ranked 10th with 1,975 points. In the girls team standings, South Dakota is currently ranked 11th with 1,275 points.
