SIOUX FALLS — Two Southeast South Dakota Conference schools claimed Class B state track and field titles on Saturday.

The Gregory boys and Burke girls earned state championships at Saturday’s South Dakota state track and field meet.

For the Gorillas, it again came down to the final event, the 1,600-meter relay. Gregory, which tied Ipswich for last season’s state championship, were trailing Freeman Academy/Marion by six points entering the final event.

Freeman Academy/Marion had 55 points, while Gregory and Ipswich both had 49 points entering the final event. FAM and Ipswich, however, did not have teams in the 1,600-meter relay.

Gregory, which was anchored in the 1,600-meter relay by Luke Stukel, finished second in 3:28.12. The eight points was enough to push them ahead of Freeman Academy/Marion, 57-55.

Gregory’s team title was boosted by the javelin, where it scored a whopping 21 points.

It was Gregory’s second-ever state championship.

The Burke girls, meanwhile, had a five-point lead entering the final event of the day. The Cougars were leading Arlington by five points and Chester by 49 points.

Neither Chester or Arlington fielded a team in the 1,600-meter relay, while Burke placed seven to pad its lead with two points. In the end, Burke scored 58 points, while Arlington (51) and Chester (49) rounded out the top-three teams.

It was Burke’s third-ever state championship, also winning titles in 1976 and ‘78.
