BROOKINGS — Sully Buttes’ Gavin Colson leads all golfers after Day 1 of the Class B boys state golf tournament.

Colson shot one-under-par during the opening day of the state tournament at the Brookings Country Club, shooting a 35 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine, totaling six birdies on the day.

Wessington Springs’ JD Thompson, Gettysburg’s Wiley Cronin and Wolsey-Wessington’s Larz Tvedt are all two strokes behind Colson for the lead after 18 holes. White River’s Bryson One Star, Philip’s Shay Weber, Sioux Falls Lutheran’s Drew Knobloch and Bon Homme’s Madden Merkwan are each tied for fifth at two-over-par.

The Philip boys currently lead the team standings shooting a 229, just ahead of Wessington Springs (232) and Bon Homme (234).

The tournament concludes on Tuesday at the Brookings Country Club.

Former state champions tied for lead at Class B girls state tourney

BROOKINGS — Clark Willow/Lake’s Brynn Roehrich and Miller’s Jayce Pugh set atop the leaderboard after Day 1 of the Class B state girls golf tournament.

Roehrich, a two-time defending state champion, and Pugh, the 2021 Class B state champion, each shot a 74 to open Monday’s action at Edgebrook Golf Course.

Roehrich shot a 32 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine, including two birdies and an eagle. Pugh shot a 37 on the front nine and back nine, adding three birdies on the opening day.

Chester’s Jadyn McDonald (77), Webster Area’s Bailee Ninke (77), Dell Rapids St. Mary’s Allie Hansen (78) and Maddison Bacon (78) round out the top-5 scores.

Dell Rapids St. Mary leads the team standings with a 239, ahead of Miller (240) and Clark/Willow Lake (251).

The tournament concludes on Tuesday at Edgebrook Golf Course.

St. Thomas More girls leads team scoring after Day 1 of Class A state tournament

NORTH SIOUX CITY — The defending state champions hold a commanding lead in the team scores after Day 1 of the Class A state girls golf tournament.

St. Thomas More shot a 297 on the opening day at Two Rivers Golf Course, ahead of Dakota Valley (310) and Sioux Falls Christian (314).

DV’s Katie Betsworth notched the best score after 18 holes shooting four-under-par. Betsworth shot a 34 on the front nine, a 32 on the back nine with five birdies as well.

STM’s defending individual champs Kaitlin Strain (67) and Rylan Horning (72) are just behind Betsworth with DV’s Addicyn Sailer (72) and Chamberlain’s Trey Speer (75) round out the top-5 individual scores.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday at Two Rivers Golf Course.

O’Gorman’s Ari Jacobs holds two-stroke lead after Day 1 of Class AA girls state tourney

WATERTOWN — O’Gorman’s Ari Jacobs is leading the pack after Day of the Class AA girls state tournament.

Jacobs shot a 70 for two-under-par on the opening day at Cattail Crossing Golf Course, shooting a 35 on both the front nine and back nine. Jacobs added four birdies on Day 1 as well.

The defending Class AA state champion, Aberdeen Central’s Olivia Braun, is in second, shooting a 72 with Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Abigail Westra (73) not far behind. O’Gorman’s Erin Hurd, Aberdeen Central’s Emma Dohrer and Kyley Wirebaugh as well as Brandon Valley’s Vanessa Smith are all tied for fourth at 74 as well.

The Golden Eagles lead the team scoring at 295, ahead of O’Gorman (304) and Mitchell (308).

The tournament concludes on Tuesday at Cattail Crossing Golf Course.
