State Golf Roundup - Wessington Springs leads Class B boys after Day 1

BROOKINGS — Wessington Springs holds a nine-shot lead over Hanson and Hamlin after Day 1 of the Class B boys golf tournament. 

The Spartans shot a 237, while Hamlin and Hanson shot 246s. Chester (247) and Clark/Willow Lake (248) rounded out the top-five teams. 

Individually, Wessington Springs’ Blake Larson leads with a 2-over 74, including a 36 on the back nine. Sully Buttes’ Gavin Colson and Miller’s Derek Brueggeman are tied for second with 75s. 

Faulkton Area’s Drake Mueller and Colman-Egan’s Taylor Kriech are tied for fifth with 76s. 


Chester, Miller battling atop Class B girls tourney 

BROOKINGS — Defending Class B Chester and Miller have separated themselves from the Class B pack.

At the Class B girls state golf tournament, Chester holds a seven-shot lead over Miller at Edgebrook Golf Course. Clark/Willow Lake is 25 shots off the pace, while Jones County and Burke are 27 shots back.

Individually, Chester’s Jadyn McDonald (76) sits atop the leaderboard. McDonald shot 38s on both the front and back nine. 

Miller’s Jayce Pugh (77) is in second place, while Clark/Willow Lake’s Brynn Roehrich (79) is in third place. Potter County’s Olivia Mikkelsen (81) is in fourth place, while Jones County’s Kamri Kittelson (83) and Sully Buttes’ Olivia Olson (83) are tied for fifth place. 


Sioux Falls Christian girls hold 21-shot lead in Class A

SIOUX FALLS — Defending Class A state champ Sioux Falls Christian is off to a commanding lead after Day 1 of the state tournament at Bakker Crossing Golf Course. 

The Chargers hold a 21-shot lead over Vermillion and West Central. 

Individually, Sioux Falls Christian’s Tori Peterson, Rapid City Christian’s Hayden Thorton and St. Thomas More’s Kaitlin Strain are tied atop the leaderboard with 77s. 

West Central’s Dakotah Larson, Vermillion’s Ronnie Wilharm, Katie Betsworth and West Central’s Ari Jacobs are tied in fourth place with 78s. 


Mitchell holds one-shot lead in Class AA

YANKTON — Defending Class AA state champion Mitchell holds a one-shot lead in a tight team race at Hillcrest Country Club. 

The Kernels hold a one-shot lead over Aberdeen Central and a two-shot margin over Watertown.

Individually, Aberdeen Central’s Olivia Braun shot an even-par 72, including a 35 on the front nine. Mitchell’s Allison Meyerink (75) is in second place after Day 1. 

Mitchell’s Maddie Childs (78) and O’Gorman’s Erin Hurd (78) are tied for third place. Watertown’s Gabi Olson, Yankton’s Ellia Homstad and Spearfish’s Alison Kennedy all shot 78s and are tied for fifth place.
