PIERRE — From the opening dual this season the Sturgis wrestlers looked several notches better than the rest of the Class A field. 

After a 15-0 regular season the Scoopers put an exclamation point on their dual season with a 39-14 win over Aberdeen Central to repeat as Class A state dual champions. 

“I think we wrestled really good overall and got off to a great start with a 78-6 win over Madison,” Gunner Sarkela, Sturgis wrestler said. “Stevens usually wrestles us pretty well and the dual against Aberdeen Central went well even though they bumped a few kids around in our match.” 

After defeating Madison 78-6 the Scoopers dispatched Rapid City Stevens in the semifinals 51-18. Aberdeen Central made it to the finals with a 53-19 win over Harrisburg and a 48-23 win over Brandon Valley. 

Aberdeen Central opened a 6-0 lead in the finals with wins from Jordan Foss (285) and Jackson Dargatz (106). The Scooper rattled off 30 straight points with wins from Tyler Baldwin, Mason Hagen, Tarver Zebroski, Parker Graveman, Benjamin Nadig, Jace Thurman, Kalvin Ketelsen and Joseph Nadig to effectively clinch the state title. 

“We could have improved upon situations but this was the second year in a row and I thought we wrestled well,” Mike Abell said. “I just told the kids we are going to celebrate it right now but then we’re going to act like it didn’t happen for the next two weeks.”
