Swedlund finishes 15th on scoring list, Estes moves to 18th place

Bella Swedlund capped off her outstanding career with 18 points in Winner’s 36-33 SoDak 16 loss against Wagner on Thursday. 

The University of Kansas signee finished her career with 2,256 career points, which is 15th on the state’s all-time girls basketball scoring list. The multiple-time all-stater guided Winner to three state tournament berths, including the 2019 state championship. (The 2020 state tourney was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

Also on Thursday, White River’s Maleighya Estes extended her senior season and moved up the state’s all-time scoring list. The Dakota Wesleyan University signee scored 19 points in White River’s 44-32 SoDak 16 victory over Herreid/Selby Area. 

She moved past Colome’s Roxie Harter, Harding County’s Tanna Negaard and Viborg-Hurley’s Abby Hora on the state’s all-time scoring list. Estes now has 2,140 career points, which is 18th on the all-time girls basketball scoring list. Irene-Wakonda’s Shannon O’Malley is 17th with 2,154 career points. 

Mitchell Christian’s Jill Young is the all-time leader with 3,317 career points. 

Estes and White River will play in the Class B state girls basketball tournament on March 10-12 in Watertown.
