Tavin Schroeder and Asia VanDerWerff claim Region 3B cross-country titles

BURKE — Freeman Academy/Marion’s Tavin Schroeder and Gregory’s Asia VanDerWerff won individual titles at Wednesday’s Region 3B cross-country meet at the Burke Golf Course. 

Schroeder won the boys 5,000-meter race with a time of 16 minutes and 47.36 seconds, just ahead of Mitchell Christian’s Silas Holderman (16:48) and Freeman Academy/Marion’s Finley McConniel (17:22). Gregory’s Finn Adams (17:28) and Mitchell Christian’s Luke Mentele (17:45) rounded out the top-five boys finishers. 

VanDerWerff ran her 5,000-meter race in 21:05, just ahead of Menno’s Ashton Massey (21:23) and Gregory’s Abigail Engel (21:26). Burke’s Sophia Bauld (21:44) and Freeman Academy/Marion’s Estelle Waltner (22:00) rounded out the top-five girls performers.

A very tight boys race with Mitchell Christian winning the team title with 18 points, ahead of Freeman Academy/Marion (22) and Gregory (24). Avon (40) and Canistota (41) and Freeman (41) rounded out the top-five team finishers. 

Gregory dominated the girls 3B team race scoring just 10 points, ahead of Burke (21) and Scotland (29). Menno (37) and Mitchell Christian (47) rounded out the top-five girl’s teams.
