WATERTOWN — Trevor Schulz made school history on Tuesday.

The Wall High School junior captured the Class B boys state golf championship, becoming the first Eagle to win a state championship in school history.

“It’s really special,” Schulz said. “I get to have my name on a banner in the gym. So it’s going to be pretty cool.”

And Schulz was cool under pressure on a sunny afternoon at Watertown’s Cattail Crossing Golf Course. The field of golfers included last year’s state champ Gavin Colson of Sully Buttes, Will Jarding of state champion Hanson and perennial contender Wyatt Larson of McIntosh.

But Schulz fired a 71 on Tuesday, and scored a 1-over 145 to earn the state championship. Colson (+4), Jarding (+5), Larson (+6) and Wolsey-Wessington’s Larz Tvedt (+6) were the top-five finishers.

“They made it really tough,” Schulz said about his competitors. “I shot two over the first day and I knew on the second day I had to do really good and I played really well. I didn’t really know what the standings were until the 17th hole and then realized I won it.”

On Tuesday, Schulz shot a 34 on the front nine and notched three birdies. He parred the first five holes on the back nine. After Schulz birdied the 15th hole, he bogeyed two of the last three holes for a 37 on the back nine.

But the three-shot cushion was enough to propel Schulz, who admitted afterward he was nervous, to the state championship.

“My heart was pounding, and I really didn’t know what to do and I was just really happy,” Schulz said.

Schulz said the state championship was his goal this season, and felt rewarded for his hard work after winning the state title.

“It’s the best feeling ever,” Schulz said. “The feeling is just great.”
