Tigers finish perfect season with third straight AA title

SIOUX FALLS — Harrisburg notched a 3-peat in Class AA with a four-set win over Sioux Falls Washington Saturday for the state championship at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls. 

The Tigers (31-0) easily took the first two sets by the scores of 25-14 and 25-17 and was one point away from making it a sweep before the Warriors held off the Tigers for a set, winning 26-24 to force the fourth set. 

There, Harrisburg rolled settled down after the third to win 25-13 to capture the title. 

Gabi Zachariasen led Harrisburg with 28 kills and 11 digs while Maggie Meister had 21 digs and Lindsay Langner added 18 digs. Bergen Stiff had 10 kills and Josalyn Smauels had five ace serves and Kennedy Kokenge had three ace serves. 

Cate Legel led Washington (22-5) with 14 kills and nine digs while Kaelyn Snoozy had 19 kills. Taryn Kirsch had 18 digs Emily Akkerman had 10 digs. 

The top seeded Tigers defeated Aberdeen Central in three-sets in Thursday’s quarterfinals and advanced to the championship game with a four-set win over Sioux Falls O’Gorman in Friday’s semifinals. 

Meanwhile Washington escaped with a five-set win over Sioux Falls Roosevelt in Thursday’s quarterfinals and advanced to the title game with a three-set win over Sioux Falls Jefferson in Friday’s semifinals.
