Top Boys Basketball Performers - Miller's Alex Schumacher scores 45 points in season opener

Alex Schumacher shot into the Miller High School boys basketball record books on Dec. 7. 

The Rustler senior boys basketball player erupted for 45 points in a 73-69 loss against Stanley County. Schumacher nailed seven 3-pointers and scored 31 points in the second half. 

Schumacher’s 45-point performance is fifth on the Miller boys basketball all-time single-game scoring list. Karst Hunter has the school record with a 50-point performance, while he’s also second with a 48-point outing. 

Troy Boomsma (47) and Steven Fernholz (46) are third and fourth, respectively.

In the win against Miller, Stanley County’s Kaden Montana poured in 36 points and Broch Heeb netted 32 points. 

Here are some other top boys basketball performers from Dec. 4-9:

  • Kimball/White Lake’s Blake Leiferman finished with 21 points and 16 boards in a 56-53 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Dec. 7. 
  • Milbank’s Garrett Mertens logged 26 points and five assists in a 69-24 win over Sisseton on Dec. 7. 
  • Canton’s Matt Anderson posted 24 points and 11 boards in a 73-49 win over Elk Point-Jefferson on Dec. 7. 
  • Tad Tjaden (28 points) and Carson Maeschen (23 points) led the Dell Rapids to a 61-59 overtime win over West Central on Dec. 8. 
  • Castlewood’s Bryon Laue posted 15 points and 26 rebounds in a 65-51 win over Waubay-Summit on Dec. 8.
  • Waubay-Summit’s Jackson Wohlleber had 24 points against Castlewood.
  • Jaxson Wingert (28 points/10 rebounds) and Luke Bruns (24 points/5 rebounds) led Dakota Valley to a 68-56 victory over Tea Area on Dec. 8. It was Tea Area’s 54th consecutive win, the Class A boys basketball record for longest winning streak. 
  • De Smet's Grant Wilkinson posted 27 points in a 62-49 win over Deubrook Area on Dec. 8. 
  • Tea Area’s Sam Almas had 30 points against Dakota Valley. 
  • Hamlin’s Easton Neuendorf led Hamlin with 23 points in a 68-36 win over Groton Area on Dec. 8. 
  • Viborg-Hurley’s Nick Hanson scored a game-high 24 points in a 64-35 win over Freeman on Dec. 8. 
  • Colman-Egan’s Jase Mousel recorded 22 points, eight rebounds and four steals in a 64-52 win over Arlington on Dec. 8. 
  • Baltic’s Jack Erickson logged 34 points in a 74-38 win over Beresford on Dec. 8. 
  • Jones County’s Cooper Feddersen posted a pair of double-doubles last week. He logged 25 points and 13 rebounds against Highmore-Harrold. Against White River, he had 19 points and 17 rebounds. 
  • Ipswich’s Trevor Heinz recorded 24 points in a 57-48 win over Hitchcock-Tulare on Dec. 9. 
  • Chester’s Layke Wold had 22 points, four assists and four steals in a 55-34 win over Garretson on Dec. 9. 
  • Milbank’s Garrett Mertens finished with 26 points and five assists in a 63-54 victory over Lennox on Dec. 9. 
  • Lennox’s Tate Gerdes had 24 points against Milbank.
