DELL RAPIDS — There isn’t much Trimmier Hanson can’t do on the football field.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound quarterback/defensive back is a versatile player for Class 9B No. 2 Dell Rapids St. Mary and he showcased his skills on Oct. 10.

Hanson took snaps at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive back and was the team’s kick returner and punter in the Cardinals’ 34-20 win over Class 9A No. 3 Alcester-Hudson.

“The adrenaline really kicked in,” Hanson said after the win Friday. “It was fun, I was locked in. It was a good time with my fellas to get that win for sure.”

And it wasn’t the volume of snaps that made Hanson’s night impressive, it was his production on both sides of the football.

Offensively, Hanson rushed 16 times for 133 yards and two rushing touchdowns, completed 1-of-3 pass attempts for 20 yards and a touchdown, and caught two passes for 105 yards and one receiving touchdown.

“He kind of did it all tonight, he was all over the field and played a fantastic game,” said St. Mary head coach Ross Flemmer. “You score four touchdowns and the kids got all of them, that’s pretty important.”

On defense, the senior totaled two tackles and a fourth-quarter interception to help seal the win. All things considered, Hanson’s workload is hefty but he seems to manage just fine.

“I definitely do need some breaks, but I love being out there with my friends, my teammates, it’s like the best thing,” Hanson said. “That’s what motivates me out here and we have bigger goals than this so hopefully we can get better every single week.”

And with a multitude of playmakers for the Cardinals, it’s tough to say who will have a breakout game in a given week, but coach Flemmer says they make it a point to keep Hanson involved as much as possible.

“Him and Lincoln LeBrun, Logan Bauer, Jaxon Baumberger and Tommy LaVoy, We’ve got some pretty darn explosive players so it could be any given night,” Flemmer said. “But obviously we want to get him the ball.”

The veteran Hanson is a four-year starter on defense and three-year starter on offense and knows what it takes to win big games, and found a way to be the difference maker in the Cardinals’ signature win over the Cubs and remain undefeated on the year.

“We knew we had to come out physically,” Hanson said. “It was whoever was the more physical team, that team was a good team. It was whoever came out of the gate physically and us as seniors, we knew that this was a game that could define our season.”

Hanson and Dell Rapids St. Mary (7-0) will now host Sioux Falls Lutheran (5-2) Friday night at 7 p.m. in the final week of the regular season. With a win, the Cardinals would clinch the No. 1 seed in Class 9B.

“Sioux Falls Lutheran is a much improved team,” Flemmer said. “They’ve got some athletes and we’re going to have to show up ready to play against them, too.”
