PHOENIX — Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal made South Dakota history on March 31.

Koupal became the first South Dakota girls basketball player to ever play in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game. She joins Mitchell’s Mike Miller as the only two South Dakotans to play in the game.

Koupal and the East lost to the West, 91-71, in the girls McDonald’s All-American Game. Providence Academy, Minnesota’s Maddyn Greenway also played for the East.

Greenway is the daughter of Mount Vernon native and former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway. Koupal’s mother, Tera, and Greenway are both Mount Vernon High School graduates. Maddyn Greenway will play college basketball at Division I Kentucky.

Koupal and Greenway will both play in the Jordan Brand Classic on April 17 in Torrance, California. Koupal is the second South Dakotan to ever play in the all-star game, joining Sioux Falls Washington’s Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda in 2022.

Koupal, one of South Dakota’s most all-time decorated girls basketball players, recently made her fourth consecutive Class A all-state first-team selection. A 6-foot-3 do-it-all guard/forward, Koupal averaged 28.3 points, 14 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game, while blocking 82 shots this past season. Koupal racked up 2,610 points, 1,210 rebounds, 463 assists, 383 blocks and 253 steals in her career. Her point total is the fifth most in South Dakota girls basketball history.

She will play college basketball at Division I Nebraska.
