Week of Feb. 2 Girls Basketball Games to Watch - Vermillion set for pair of early-February tests

RV Sioux Falls Christian at No. 2 Vermillion 

No. 1 Hamlin vs. No. 2 Vermillion 

The Vermillion Tanagers will put their undefeated record to the test on Thursday.

Class A No. 2 Vermillion (15-0) has gone from unranked to one of the last three remaining undefeated teams (Hamlin, Red Cloud) left in its class. The Tanagers will play Sioux Falls Christian (13-1) tonight in a big Dak-XII contest and will turn around and play Class A No. 1 Hamlin on Saturday at the Dak-XII/NEC Clash in Madison. 

The Tanagers are outscoring their opponents by 17.5 points per game, while they’ve picked up tight wins over Wagner (53-52), Elk Point-Jefferson (47-46) and Luverne, Minnesota (32-31). Vermillion is paced by Kasey Hanson, Leah Herbster, Brooklyn Voss, Brooke Jensen, Jenaya Cleveland, Chandler Cleveland and Taylor Reuvers. 

Hamlin is 14-0 entering tonight’s contest against Castlewood. The Chargers have picked up quality wins over St. Thomas More (39-34), Florence-Henry (45-31) and Sisseton (52-43). Hamlin is led by Kami Wadsworth, Marissa Bawdon, Ally Abraham, Addison Neuendorf and Brooklyn Brandriet. The Hamlin vs. Vermillion matchup is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to cap off the Dak-XII/NEC Clash in Madison. 


No. 3 Wagner vs. No. 1 Viborg-Hurley 

In a rescheduled contest, Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley will play Class A No. 3 Wagner on Saturday at Yankton’s Mount Marty University. 

The matchup features a pair of title contenders in their respective classes. Wagner is 14-1 entering Thursday’s contest against Andes Central/Dakota Christian. Wagner’s lone defeat was against Class A No. 2 Vermillion, a 53-52 setback at the Hanson Classic. The Red Raiders are led by Shalayne Nagel, Emma Yost, Ashlyn Koupal, Macy Koupal, Lydia Yost and Eve Zephier. Ashlyn Koupal, a 6-foot-2 freshman guard, has received major Division I college basketball offers. Nagel and Emma Yost will play basketball next season at Dakota Wesleyan University. 

The Cougars, who won last season’s Class B state championship, are undefeated against South Dakota competition this season. The Cougars are 13-1, with their lone defeat coming against Campbell County, Wyoming (56-55) on a buzzer beater at the Hoop City Classic in Sioux Falls. 

Viborg-Hurley owns a 72-52 win over Class B No. 2 Wolsey-Wessington at the Hanson Classic. The Cougars recently topped Class B No. 3 Centerville, 52-41. 

Viborg-Hurley scores 60.6 points per game and has a number of playmakers on its roster, including Denae Mach, Coral Mason, Estelle Lee, Shelby Lyons and Aubree Schwartz.
