SIOUX FALLS — Shawn Hammerbeck, who is already an accomplished football and basketball player, added a state track and field title to his résumé.

The Winner High School junior claimed the Class A boys discus title, throwing a school record toss of 163-feet and three-inches.

“It feels really good,” Hammerbeck said. “You can't really complain with the wind, and I exceeded expectations. So it feels good.”

Hammerbeck, who is an all-state football and basketball player, entered the discus event with the fourth-best mark in the field. Hammerbeck’s first throw of 160-4 was good enough to get him into finals.

“I was chasing 160,” Hammerbeck said. “So I knew I could get there. I was just happy that I did.”

After two straight fouls, he threw 149-1 and 155-4. Hammerbeck then unleashed his mark of 163-3 to earn the state title, finishing ahead of No. 1 seed Paul Hoekman. The Sioux Falls Christian junior finished second with a toss of 157-1.

“It’s unreal, of course,” Hammerbeck added about the title. “I knew they had nice rings. I was like ‘I can throw one out here today.’ My first throw was 160. I was like ‘Let’s get a little farther than that.’ That last one felt good.”

The wind was whipping throughout most of the day, but Hammerbeck said it was the same conditions for everyone in the field.

“Everyone has got the same environment,” Hammerbeck said. “So you can’t complain. You just have to go out and throw.”

Hammerbeck, who stands 6-foot-7, 250-pounds, is also a major Division I football recruit that will compete in the shot put and javelin at the state track meet.
