Yankton Bucks win first-ever state tennis championship

RAPID CITY — Yankton captured three total championships — one singles and two doubles — en route to the Class A boys state team title on Tuesday. It’s the first state tennis title for Yankton, which placed second last season to Sioux Falls Christian. 

The Bucks racked up 493.5 points, pulling away from a host of teams for the state championship. Rapid City Christian (422.5) and Mitchell (397.5) were just behind in the team standings.

Harrison Krajewski was Yankton’s lone singles champion in Flight No. 4 singles. Yankton’s Gage Becker and Zachary Briggs captured Flight No. 1 doubles, while Krajewski and Dylan Ridgway won Flight No. 3 doubles.

In Flight No. 1 singles, Rapid City Christian’s Noah Greni defeated Yankton’s Gage Becker (6-2, 6-4) to win the state championship. In the semifinals, Greni defeated Mitchell’s Macon Larson (6-1, 7-5), while Becker beat Lennox’s Jaxon Plank (6-3, 7-6, (7-5)). 

In Flight No. 2 singles, Sioux Falls Christian’s Daniel Puumala outlasted Mitchell’s Tyler Loecker (5-7, 6-4, (10-7)) to capture the state championship. Loecker defeated Pierre’s Blake Judson (6-3, 6-3) in the semifinals, while Puumala defeated Lennox’s Andrew Daughtery (6-4, 6-4).

In Flight No. 3 singles, Rapid City Christian’s Andrew Dobbs edged Yankton’s Zachary Briggs (7-5, 1-6, 10-8) to earn the state title. Briggs defeated Sioux Falls Christian’s Jadon Munson (7-6(5), 6-0) in the semifinals, while Dobbs picked up a 6-3, 6-3, win over Mitchell’s Aidan Patrick.

In Flight No. 4 singles, Yankton’s Harrison Krajewski won the state championship over Pierre’s Luke Leingang (6-3, 7-5). Krajewski and Leingang both had to go through tough semifinalists to earn the title berth. Leingang defeated Mitchell’s Jack Vermeulen (6-0, 5-7, 10-8), while Krajewski outlasted Rapid City Christian’s Jack Hancock (6-1, 6-7(7), 10-6)). 

In Flight No. 5 singles, Pierre’s Spencer Kelly was the No. 3 seed and he knocked off No. 1 Keaton List, of Yankton, 7-6(5) and 6-3 in the championship match. In the semifinals, List defeated Rapid City Christian’s Noah Geyer (6-1, 7-6(7)), while Kelly knocked off Mitchell’s Josh Grosdidier (6-4, 6-4) in the other semifinal match.

In Flight No. 6 singles, Mitchell’s Luke Jerke outlasted Yankton’s Miles Krajewski (3-6, 7-5, 10-2) in the championship match. Jerke defeated Pierre’s Carter Schulz (6-1, 6-2) in the semifinals, while Krajewski knocked off Rapid City Christian’s Henry Beckloff (6-2, 4-6, 10-3).
