Yankton claims Class 2A title at Clay Target League state tournament

ABERDEEN — Yankton high school hit 472 targets Sunday to win the Class 2A Clay Target League State Tournament team title at the Aberdeen Gun Club in Aberdeen. Mitchell and Pierre both hit 469 targets with Mitchell finishing second and Pierre finishing third. 

Brookings had a strong showing Sunday claiming team titles in the junior varsity and novice divisions. In the junior varsity division Brookings scored 430 to slip past Bowdle (423) and Yankton (421). In the novice division Brookings led the way with a score of 375 to edge Bowdle (374) and Harrisburg (349). 

Individually, Yankton high school’s Payton Silvernail won the 2A High-Gun competition with a score of 98, edging Platte-Geddes’ Jadon Peterson and Mitchell’s Chase Eitemiller who both broke 97 targets. Silvernail was also named High-Gun for the 2A tournament. 

Mitchell’s Maddy Henkel won the girls 2A championship breaking 94 targets to edge teammate Delana Henkel and Platte-Geddes’ Harper Kirsch who both broke 90 targets. 

In the junior varsity boys competition Yankton’s Ethan Bradwisch won the High-Gun competition with a score of 93, edging Gabe Boyer of Brookings (93) and Josh Ohohauser of Aberdeen Central (93). Harrisburg’s Sophia Vant Hul won the junior high, High-Gun girls title with a score of 84. Vant Hul edged Pierre’s Megan Rose and Mitchell’s Brooke Ver Hey, with all athletes breaking 84 targets. 

In the novice division Raynor Sprague of Bowdle won the boys High-Gun competition with a score of 82, edging Yankton’s Christopher Rockne and Christopher Gross who each broke 81 targets. Platte-Geddes shooter Piper Rasmussen won the girls novice, High-Gun competition breaking 88 targets to edge Pierre’s Courtney Potter (84) and Bowdle’s Natalie Bieber (79).
