PLATTE —- A very cool event on Monday in Platte as the school will be hosting a 10-team meet in which only the pole vault and javelin will be contested. 

In honor of that out-of-the-box thinking to host a meet like this, and with a lack of meets last week because of weather, let’s highlight our South Dakota athletes that contest these oh so very technical field events. 

Keep an eye on the Class AA pole vault as Beau Karst (Harrisburg) and Owen Spartz (Watertown) look to chase down the state record of Wagner’s Jaden Peters (16-01.50) from 2021. Spartz had a clearance of (15-09, No. 5 all-time in South Dakota) and has a clearance of 14-00 so far in 2024. Karst has a clearance of 15-09 in 2024. 

What a great time to be a javelin thrower in South Dakota. The event is still relatively new in South Dakota and will be contested at the state meet for Class A and Class B schools for the first time in May. Translation, state records and Class A and Class B records will be constantly being challenged this spring

Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Jack Smith set the state record (193-07) earlier this spring and seems poised to become the first South Dakota prep athlete to top 200-00. It looks like the Class AA girls have a real battle coming later this spring. Rapid City Stevens athlete Brynn Nelson set the state record in 2023 (136-03). Nelson has a throw of 136-01 this spring but the new state record belongs to Sioux Falls Washington’s Isabel Carda (138-03
