Brandon Valley track teams sweep titles at Pierre American Legion Relays

PIERRE — The Brandon Valley girls easily won the girls team title at Monday’s American Legion Relays. The Lynx scored 176 points, well ahead of Sioux Falls Washington (104.5) and Pierre (86). Custer (78) and Mitchell (68.5) were the top-five girls teams on Monday. 

The Brandon Valley boys scored 105 points, edging Pierre (103) and Sioux Falls Washington (95). Yankton (92) and Mitchell (72) rounded out the top-five teams. 

Brandon Valley senior Mia Wentzy along with Addison Scholten, Lily Rude and Sarah VanDeBerg won the 3,200-meter relay in a meet record time of 9:21.71.  Wentzy also won the 3,200-meter run (11:27.13). The Lynx won the 1,600-meter relay (4:03.02) and the sprint medley relay (4:14.59).

Other wins for Brandon Valley came from Ellie Andrews in the 800-meter run (2:28.60), Haley Bergen in the 1,600-meter run (5:28.75), Shelby Bergen in the 300-meter hurdles (:47.97).

Sioux Falls Washington senior Nyariek Kur won four events and scared the 40-foot barrier in the triple jump with a leap of (39-10.75, No. 3 all-time in South Dakota history). Kur also won the  100-meter hurdles (:15.26), high jump (5-05) and long jump (18-03.75). 

Pierre’s Kali Ringstmeyer won the 200-meter dash (:25.50), ran the opening leg on the winning 400-meter relay (:50.51) and  ran the opening leg on the second place 1,600-meter relay (4:16.32).

In boys action Mitchell’s Nathan McCormick won the 100-meter dash (:11.17), 200-meter dash (:22.21) and 400-meter dash (:51.34).

Pierre’s Jared Lutmer was a double distance winner, winning the 1,600-meter run (4:25.55) and 3,200-meter run (9:46.75). Pierre’s Colter Babcock won the javelin (156-06).

Huron’s Bryan Ramierez won the shot put (52-05.75) and discus (150-00).

The Custer boys picked up wins in the 1,600-meter relay (3:34.88), from Robbie Emery in the pole vault (13-09) and Kincade Lehman in the long jump (21-07.25) and Carter Tennyson in the high jump (6-04). Tennyson’s mark in the high jump broke a 27-year old school record. 

Brandon Valley’s only win came in the triple jump as Wyatt Melcher (42–09) and Mach Mayen (42-06) and Caden Walkes (40-03) swept the top-three spots. Team depth carried the Lynx to the team title Monday.
