CHESTER — In their first year of playing softball, the Chester Flyers are exceeding expectations and Jacy Wolf is a big reason why.

Off to a 5-0 start, first year coach Laura Biagi said the freshman has been key to the quick start this season.

“She’s tough and works great under pressure,” Biagi said. “If we need something done you want her to be the one making those plays.”

Through five games Wolf is 4-0 from the mound while batting .643 (9-14) with six RBI. She also has seven stolen bases.

“In one game she had a complete game shutout with 15 strikeouts while allowing just two hits in a game that went six innings,” Biagi said.

Wolf was a member of the 2023 Class B state championship volleyball team, and a hurdler and a relay participant on Chester’s track team. The freshman said she was pretty fired up when Chester announced they would be playing competitive softball this spring.

“I was pretty happy to have another sport where we could go to state and be competitive,” she said. “We felt like we could be pretty good in our first year because we’ve been playing together for a long time and we all get along really well.”

Through five games, wins over Flandreau, Colman-Egan, Viborg-Hurley (twice) and McCook Central/Montrose, the Flyers are averaging 12 runs per game.

Biagi had high expectations for the girls despite not playing last year, the first that softball was a sanctioned sport by the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

“I didn’t expect us to be 5-0,” Biagi said. “We have a lot of athletes that are learning the game and their sports IQ is off the charts.”

Against McCook Central/Montrose on Friday, April 12, Wolf pitched in relief, getting her first save of the season in a 17-9 win.

“Jacy mostly throws hard and we are working on her movement right now,” Biagi said. “She’s a great kid that does well in the classroom and if she wants something she is going to go out and get it.”

Chester senior MaKaylyn Borecky is batting .800 (12-15) with five RBI through four games.

The Flyers are scheduled to have a doubleheader at Oldham-Ramona-Rutland on Monday before returning home for a doubleheader with Baltic on Friday.
