Class 11A Playoff Preview - Sioux Falls Christian heavy favorite to secure first Class 11A state championship

The Sioux Falls Christian Chargers are on a mission. 

After dropping a 14-6 decision against Lennox in last season’s Class 11A state championship, Sioux Falls Christian has not lost since and is the only undefeated team in the class. 

No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian (9-0) will host No. 8 Rapid City Christian (5-4) in its playoff opener. The Chargers defeated the Comets, 48-21, on Sept. 5. Sioux Falls Christian has outscored its opponents by 33.7 points per game, and its closest game was a 17-0 win over Lennox. The Chargers are gunning for their first-ever Class 11A state championship. Sioux Falls Christian’s two previous football titles in 2017 and ‘18 were in Class 11B. 

The Comets dropped games against Canton (27-6), Sioux Falls Christian (48-21) and Dell Rapids (43-8) to open the season. But won five of their last six games to secure a playoff berth. 

No. 4 Madison (7-2) hosts No. 5 West Central (6-3) in their first meeting this season. The Bulldogs’ signature win was a 21-20 win over No. 2 Dell Rapids on Sept. 5. Madison’s two losses were against Sioux Falls Christian (42-6) and Lennox (44-19). 

The Trojans lost against Sioux Falls Christian (24-0), along with narrow defeats against Dell Rapids (21-20) and Milbank (22-21). 

No. 2 Dell Rapids (6-3) will host No. 7 Milbank (6-3) in a rematch from a Sept. 19 game, a 36-7 Quarriers win. Dell Rapids is on a two-game losing streak entering the postseason, losing to Sioux Falls Christian (41-15) and Lennox (34-14). The Quarriers rattled off a five-game winning streak in the middle of the season. 

Milbank used a four-game winning streak to help secure a playoff berth, including a 22-21 win over No. 5 West Central on Oct. 17. 

No. 3 Lennox (7-2) will host No. 6 Tri-Valley (6-3) in a rematch from Oct. 17, a 41-0 Orioles win. The Orioles lost to Sioux Falls Christian (17-0) and West Central (9-7) in back-to-back weeks, but strung together five straight wins to close the regular season. Lennox picked up quality wins over Madison (44-19) and Dell Rapids (34-14) in the five-game winning streak. 

Tri-Valley won four straight games to open the season, but dropped three of its final four games to close the season. The Mustangs lost to Dell Rapids (22-14), Madison (33-7) and Lennox (41-0). Tri-Valley topped Canton, 33-23, to close the regular season and secure a spot in the playoffs.
