Class 11B Championship Preview - Elk-Point Jefferson, St. Thomas More collide in battle of unbeatens

VERMILLION — Two unbeaten teams will meet for the Class 11B state championship.

No. 1 Elk Point-Jefferson (11-0) takes on No. 2 St. Thomas More (11-0) in an East vs. West showdown for the Class 11B state title Friday at 2 p.m. inside the DakotaDome.

EPJ is looking for its second state title in school history and first since 2022, while St. Thomas More is trying for its first-ever state title in its seventh appearance at the DakotaDome.

The Huskies are 11-0 this season, knocking off notable teams in Mount Vernon-Plankinton (32-14), Winner (20-8), Wagner (48-0) and Sioux Valley (twice, 41-26 and 49-14). EPJ defeated Deuel (43-36) in the semifinals on Nov. 7.

EPJ is averaging 44 points per game while allowing just 14.3 points per game defensively. The Huskies utilized a run-heavy offense that totaled over 250 yards in the semifinal win over Deuel.

Aiden Hammitt led the attack with 161 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, Beau Schmitz added 31 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries, Levi Hanson tallied 16 yards and a touchdown while Brody Van Roekel had 44 yards and a touchdown on just two carries in the win.

St. Thomas More will try to get rid of its championship woes, gunning for its first state football championship on its seventh trip to the DakotaDome in school history.

The Cavaliers have been powered by its defense that’s allowed just 4.6 points per game this season. STM is outscoring its opponents 473-51 in 11 games this season, averaging 42.1 points per game, good for the second-best scoring offense in 11B.

STM has knocked off notable teams such as Sioux Valley (28-12), Mount Vernon-Plankinton (twice, 29-8 and 31-8) and Clark-Willow Lake (50-14) in the semifinals.

The Cavaliers are led by sophomore quarterback Noah Wald, senior tight end Max Speed, senior wideouts Ryan Neugebauer and Broeden Sales, as well as senior running back Grayden Juve.
