After Hamlin’s undefeated run to the Class 9AA state championship, the field is wide open in 2025.

The Chargers open the season as the second-ranked team in 9AA according to the preseason media poll with six first-place votes with a total of 55 points. Elkton-Lake Benton is the current top-ranked team receiving five first place votes totaling 66 points, Parkston and Viborg-Hurley sit at No. 3 and No. 4 in the poll receiving three and two first-place votes, respectively, while Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy rounds out the top-5.

Storylines to watch

Can Hamlin reload?: The Chargers lost eight talented seniors from last season’s championship squad, including six starters on offense and four all-staters. Hamlin still has starting quarterback Jackson Wadsworth, who won Joe Robbie MVP and outstanding back of the game in the 9AA state championship, but will have to find plenty of help for the missing pieces from last year.

Will Elkton-Lake Benton finally take over as 9AA’s best?:The Elks have built a solid program over the past half decade, but have yet to find themselves in the title game. The Elks, ranked the No. 1 team in the preseason prep media poll, lost to Hamlin twice last season, including a 20-16 loss in the state semifinals. But 2025 could be a different story. Colt Beck returns at quarterback along with two all-state lineman from last season in Taiton Boersma and Quintin Westley.

State semifinal rematch in Week 1: Parkston and Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy faced off twice in the 2024 season, including a narrow 28-22 victory for Parkston in the state semis. With plenty of key skill players gone from the Trojans, F/M/FA could finally sneak out of Parkston with a win at 7 p.m. Friday.
