Class 9B Playoff Preview - Top-four seeds still remain in Class 9B semifinals

The top-four seeds still remain in Class 9B.

The Class 9B semifinals feature the top-four seeds, with No. 1 Dell Rapids St. Mary, No. 2 Avon, No. 3 Colman-Egan and No. 4 Faulkton Area still alive.

Dell Rapids St. Mary (10-0) hosts Faulkton Area (7-3), while Avon (9-1) hosts Colman-Egan (7-3) in the two semifinal contests. 

The Cardinals have put together a dominant season, outscoring their by 44.9 points per game and are scoring 53.8 points per game. St. Mary’s has pitched three shutouts this season, and picked up wins over Irene-Wakonda (72-6) and Corsica-Stickney (56-6) in the playoffs. 

Against the Jaguars, Lincoln LeBrun rushed for 116 yards on eight carries and scored a rushing touchdown. Trimmier Hanson added eight carries for 34 yards and a touchdown. Thomas LaVoy rushed for 161 yards on six carries. Jake Heinitz, Jacob Geraets and Jaxon Baumberger rushed for touchdowns. Logan Bauer hauled in four catches for 120 yards and caught two touchdown passes. 

Hanson completed 3-of-4 passes for two touchdowns. Defensively, Gavin Pica posted 10.5 tackles. LeBrun had 9.5 tackles and scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery. Kade Lutt and Hanson had interceptions. 

Faulkton Area is riding a five-game winning streak, including wins over Burke (61-22) and Sully Buttes (32-22) in the playoffs. The Trojans rushed for 277 yards in the win over the Chargers, with Tristen Baloun rushing for 122 yards. Spencer Melius scored three total touchdowns in the win.

The Pirates picked up wins over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland (50-0) and Sioux Falls Lutheran (62-30) in the playoffs. Against the Eagles, Cale Cooper and Weston Bierema each scored three rushing touchdowns. Cooper had 20 carries for 140 yards. The Pirates rushed for 324 yards. Easton Sees passed for 89 yards, while Al’Shamon Gunter had 56 yards receiving and a touchdown. Defensively, Braylon Fathke had five tackles, a sack, and an interception.

Colman-Egan dropped games against Avon (38-0), Canistota (20-12) and St. Mary’s (54-6) to open the season. The Hawks have rattled off seven straight wins, including playoff wins over Arlington (50-0) and Herreid-Selby Area (24-14). 

Against the Wolverines, Hayden Pearson rushed for three touchdowns, while Rhyder Behnke hauled in a touchdown pass from Zach Pederson.
